Summary: Shou shows up to practice late and doesn't look or sound well
Author's Comment: My Alice Nine muses are bombarding me with story ideas, so here's another one. I had some troubles with the end of this one so I'm not too happy with how it turned out, but oh well. Let me know what you think :)

Nao looked at his watch with a frown. “Where’s Shou? He should have been here ten minutes ago.”

“I don’t know.” Hiroto glanced at the door of the practice room. “Maybe he slept in.”

“Did you wear him out last night?” Saga asked, making suggestive hand motions.

Nao turned crimson. “Saga!”

Hiroto chuckled. “No, he went back to his apartment after we ate dinner. It’s hard to have sex with Shou when he isn’t there.” The vocalist would have spent the night at Hiroto’s, but he wanted to finish the lyrics for their newest song and get some other things done. Staying with Hiroto would have been too distracting.

“Maybe we should call,” Tora suggested.

Saga nodded. “Yeah, we can’t start practice without him.”

“I’ll call him.” Hiroto took out his cell phone and was about to dial Shou’s number, but paused as the vocalist entered the practice room. Shou looked like he’d just rolled out of bed. He usually dressed well, but today he’d donned sweatpants and an old shirt. Even his hair was kind of messy.

“Sorry I’m late. I slept through my alarm, my car wouldn’t start, and I had a hard time finding a taxi.”

Hiroto frowned. “Why didn’t you call me? I would have given you a ride to work.”

“I figured you-” Shou interrupted himself with a fit of coughing, rubbing his chest once he’d finished. “I figured you were already at work, and it’d be inconvenient for you to come out to get me.”

“Inconvenient? Shou, I love you. I would gladly have picked you up.” Hiroto went over to his lover, expression filling with concern as the vocalist started to cough again. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine; I just have a bit of a cough. It’ll go away though.”

Nao didn’t seem convinced. “I don’t know. That cough sounds bad.”

“Really, I’m all right. Stop worrying about me. Now come on, we need to practice! Don’t let me hold you back anymore,” Shou said as he went over to his microphone stand.

“Which song are we playing first?” Saga asked.

Nao consulted their set list. “Let’s practice Shunkashuuutou.”

“Okay.” Shou waited patiently while the rest of Alice Nine resumed their positions. He started to sing after the others had played the opening notes, but halfway through the first verse Shou was coughing again.

“Are you sure you’re all right?” Hiroto asked.

Nao lowered his drumsticks. “Should you be singing? That cough sounds bad, Shou.”

“I’m fine,” Shou replied hoarsely, but broke out into another fit of coughing.

“I’ll get him some water.” Tora set his guitar down and left the room. Hiroto went over to his lover, rubbing his back. Shou had been fine yesterday so how had he gotten so sick so quickly? He felt warmer than usual too, but he had been coughing pretty hard so that could be the cause.

Tora returned a few minutes later with a bottle of water. “Here.”

“Thanks.” Shou took a sip but made a weird, choking noise as he started coughing again. Tora pounded on the vocalist’s back, while the rest looked on in concern.

“I don’t think you should sing, Shou. You need to go home and rest,” Nao said.

“He’s right, and I doubt coughing and singing are a good combination,” Saga added.

“I agree. You need to get home,” Hiroto insisted.

“I’m fine! I just coughed at the same time I swallowed,” Shou rasped out, taking a few more sips before capping the bottle.

“You don’t sound fine,” Saga said flatly.

“I’m okay, really. Let’s keep practicing,” Shou picked up his microphone. Reluctantly, the other members returned to their instruments. This time Shou managed to finish the first couple lines about the seasons before breaking into yet another coughing fit. Hiroto set his guitar down and went over to his boyfriend, gently patting Shou’s back as he handed him the water bottle.

“You need to take a break.”

“But we have a live next week! I need to practice,” Shou protested, but broke into another fit of coughing.

“Your health is more important than the live. If you keep trying to sing, you’re going to strain your vocal cords,” Nao said, leaving his drums and going over to them.

“No, I’ll be fine. Just let me take a short break and then we can keep going, okay?”

Hiroto frowned. “We’ll have to see how you feel first. Come on, Shou. Go sit down.” He led Shou over to a chair and sat him down in it, handing him the water bottle as the vocalist started to cough again. Just by listening to him, Hiroto knew Shou was in no condition to sing today. The guitarist gently smoothed his fingers through his lover’s hair, wishing there was something he could do to make Shou feel better. Shou hated anything that threatened his singing ability so coming down with a cough – especially when they had a live next week – was his worst nightmare.

“When did you start feeling sick?” Saga asked.

“My throat felt fuzzy yesterday,” Shou replied hoarsely.

“Drink some water.” Hiroto uncapped the bottle and held it up. Shou obediently took several sips but almost spit out the last mouthful as he started to cough again. Nao took the bottle from him, looking concerned. Nao didn’t like seeing any of them sick.

“I think you should go home, Shou.”

“I can’t, I have to practice.”

Tora frowned. “Nao’s right. You should be at home resting.”

“But the live…”

“Is next week. We still have several days of practice left,” Nao replied firmly, smoothing Shou’s bangs out of his eyes and frowning as his hand came in contact with Shou’s skin. “Shou, you’re burning up!”

“I am?” Shou touched his face.

Hiroto laid a hand against his boyfriend’s forehead, frowning deeply. Shou was definitely warm. He’d noticed that earlier and thought it was because of the coughs, but knew that wasn’t the case. Shou had a fever. “You’re going home.”

“I can’t. We need to-” Shou interrupted himself with yet another coughing fit, coughing so deeply it made Hiroto’s chest ache in sympathy. He gently rubbed Shou’s back while Nao combed his fingers through the vocalist’s hair, trying to comfort Shou to the best of their abilities. The vocalist started coughing harder, clapping a hand over his mouth before sprinting out of the room. The rest of Alice Nine stared at him, surprised.

Saga nudged Hiroto. “Go after him.”

The guitarist didn’t need to be told twice. He snatched the water bottle and chased after his boyfriend. He found Shou on his knees in front of one of the toilets, clutching his stomach as he threw up. Hiroto held the vocalist’s hair away from his face. Once the retching stopped, Shou wiped off his mouth with some toilet paper and flushed it with a shaky hand before slumping back against Hiroto’s chest.

“What happened?”

“I coughed too hard,” Shou mumbled, leaning his head against the guitarist’s shoulder.

Hiroto made a face. He hated when that happened. “As soon as you feel well enough to get back on your feet, we’re going home. I will carry you out to my car myself if I have to.”

Shou smiled weakly. “Aren’t I too heavy?”

“No.” Hiroto handed him the water bottle. “Here, have a drink.”

Shou set it aside. “I’d rather rinse my mouth out first. Can you help me up?”

“Sure.” Hiroto stood, taking Shou’s hands and pulling him up to his feet. He handed the vocalist the water bottle and Shou went over to the sink. He rinsed his mouth out and took several sips of water, but started coughing again. Hiroto wrapped his arms around Shou’s slim waist, wincing as he listened to the awful coughs. Shou should never have gotten out of bed this morning.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?’

“I didn’t know until this morning,” Shou said hoarsely, coughing again. “I figured it’d just go away.”

“Well, that’s not happening. Do you feel well enough to go back to the practice room or do you want to stay here?”

Shou rubbed his throat. “I’ll go back. I want to sit down for a few minutes before we go home.”

“All right.” Hiroto kept an arm around Shou’s waist as they returned to their band mates. The vocalist sat down in the chair again and slumped against it, looking miserable.

“What happened?” Saga asked.

“He coughed so hard he had to throw up,” Hiroto explained.

Nao stepped forward, looking worried. “Shou, go home. I’m serious.”

“I will.” Shou found Hiroto’s hand, clutching it tightly. “I just wanted to sit for a few minutes.”

Nao looked relieved. “That’s fine.”

Shou sighed. “I’m sorry we have to cancel practice because of me.”

Tora frowned. “Don’t you dare apologize for being sick. It isn’t your fault. If you feel so guilty about it, then take care of yourself and get better.”

“I will.” Shou managed a weak smile.

“Hiroto, will you take Shou home and take care of him?” Nao asked.

“I already planned on it.” Hiroto ruffled his boyfriend’s hair.

“Good. I don’t know if he’s going to be able to make it out to your car.” Saga looked Shou over. “He looks terrible.”

Shou grumbled a little. “I’m sick! What do you expect me to look like?”

Saga chuckled. “Good point.”

“I can make it out to Pon’s car. Just because I have a cough doesn’t make me a complete invalid,” Shou mumbled. He started coughing again, and by the time he’d finished he was shaking. Hiroto quickly handed him his water bottle and Shou drained its contents.

“I’ll get you some more water.” Tora took the bottle and left.

“I’ll see if I can find some medicine.” Nao followed the dark-haired man out of the room.

While they waited for them to come back, Hiroto packed up his guitar and put his music folder in the case. All Shou had brought was himself and as his wallet, keys, and phone were in his pockets, Hiroto didn’t have to worry about packing up the vocalist’s things.

“Pon, come here. I think you should take Shou to the doctor,” Saga said. Hiroto looked over at them. The bassist had a hand on Shou’s forehead. “He’s really warm, and he’s started to shiver. Plus that cough…”

“I’ll be fine. I hate going to the doctor’s office.”

“Everyone hates going to the doctor. If you’re really sick, you might have to.” Hiroto joined them and felt Shou’s cheek, frowning. He was so warm, but the vocalist was shivering. The guitarist squeaked a little as Shou hugged his waist and pulled him closer.

“Mm you’re all warm,” Shou said, covering his mouth with his forearm as he started to cough again.

Hiroto scooted closer to the vocalist. “You’re definitely going home.” He’d make an appointment with the doctor for tomorrow.

“Is he any better?” Tora came back into the practice room with two water bottles.

“No, worse.”

“I found some cough medicine.” Nao handed Shou a couple pills and one of the waters. Shou downed the pills and gulped down some water before having another coughing fit. He handed the water back to Hiroto and stood up on shaky legs. Saga caught him before he could fall and swept the sick vocalist up into his arms.

“You definitely can’t make it out to Pon’s car.”

Hiroto felt a brief flash of jealousy at the sight of Shou in Saga’s arms, but didn’t protest. He could pick Shou up for a short time, but he wouldn’t be able to make it out to the parking lot with Shou in his arms. “I’ll get my things.” He handed Tora the water bottle then picked up his guitar case, making sure he had everything he’d brought with him before heading over to the door.

“We’ll come with you,” Nao said, briefly touching Tora’s arm before joining his friends.

“You don’t have to.” Shou took an arm off of Saga’s neck as he started to cough again, muffling them in his sleeve.

“You’re our friend, Shou. We want to make sure you’ll be all right,” Tora said, tousling the vocalist’s hair.

“Let’s get you home, Shou.” Hiroto led them out to his car and unlocked the passenger door for Saga, who gently set Shou down on the seat. Tora gave him the water bottles he’d bought earlier.

“Thanks, Saga. Tora,” Shou said, smiling weakly as he uncapped one and took a few sips.

“You take care of yourself,” Tora instructed.

“I will.”

“Take good care of him, Pon,” Nao said, still looking worried.

“I will,” Hiroto promised, putting his guitar case in the back seat before getting into the driver’s side. “Let’s go to my place.”

“Okay.” Shou sipped his water as they drove away. Hiroto had to stop a couple times along the way since Shou coughed so hard he had to throw up again, and the guitarist was relieved when they finally reached his apartment. The first thing he did was put Shou to bed and make sure there was a bucket nearby in case he couldn’t get the bathroom in time. Shou set his water bottles on the bedside table and lay down, watching as Hiroto gathered more things for him. The guitarist returned with a damp washcloth, draping it over Shou’s forehead. His fever had gotten worse too, and he didn’t look or sound well.

“Is there anything else you need?” Hiroto asked, sitting down on the edge of the bed and brushing Shou’s sweaty bangs out of his face.

“Can you make me some soup?”

“Sure.” Hiroto kissed Shou on the cheek. “Let me know if you need something.”

“I will.” Shou settled back against the pillows, and Hiroto went into the kitchen. He could hear Shou’s dreadful coughing from there, and he came back with a bowl of soup and some crackers. “Here you go.” He set it down on a little tray and helped Shou sit up before placing the tray in the vocalist’s lap. He then got into bed with his lover. “How are you feeling?”

“A little better since you’re taking care of me.”

“That’s good.” Hiroto absently combed his fingers through Shou’s soft hair as the vocalist ate his soup and crackers, handing him water whenever Shou started to cough. Fortunately, he didn’t throw up and managed to finish his meal in peace. Hiroto took the tray from him and set it aside, putting the bowl in the kitchen before coming back with some medicine and a thermometer. “Put this under your tongue.”

“Yes, Doctor.” Shou obediently stuck the thermometer in his mouth. Hiroto pulled it out when it beeped, grimacing a little. The vocalist was running a fever of 100.4 °F (38 °C). Hiroto set the thermometer aside and gave Shou a couple pills.

“Take these, and see if you can get some sleep.”

Shou swallowed the pills, washing them down with some water. “Will you stay with me?” he asked, covering his mouth as he coughed again.

“Of course.” Hiroto got back into bed with Shou, replacing the old washcloth with a fresh, damp one and draping it over the vocalist’s hot forehead.

“I’m sorry if I get you sick.”

“I don’t care. I’d rather get sick from taking care of you than be healthy from ignoring you.” Hiroto reached for one of Shou’s hands and laced their fingers together, pulling the sheets up. It was early for a nap, but long as Shou slept he didn’t mind.

Shou smiled tiredly. “Thanks, Pon.” He closed his eyes and soon fell asleep. Hiroto stayed awake for awhile since Shou kept coughing in his sleep, but after awhile he managed to doze off too with his head pillowed against the vocalist’s shoulder.

It feels good, somehow, to read, that they are human as everyone else and it is so super cute, that Hiroto is taking care for Shou!
And I laughed hard about the "It's hard to sleep with him when..."
