Title: A Soldier's Dream
Author: [livejournal.com profile] write_my_dreams
Pairing: Gackt x Hyde (Dream only: past ? x Hyde)
Genre: AU, action
Warning/Disclaimer: Contains violence. Gackt, Hyde, and You own themselves. All I own is the storyline.
Rating: PG-13
Chapters: 2/12
Summary: After guest-starring for VAMPS on Halloween, the costumes Gackt and Hyde wore haunt Gackt in his sleep and inspire a vivid dream.
Author's Comment: I actually wrote part of this chapter before I started Chapter 1. Editing was... difficult. I'm still unhappy with the middle part. Originally, that scene was very short, but I realized it was way too short so I added in more action. I've tinkered with it and fixed things, but I'm still annoyed with parts. I think I'm just too rusty when it comes to writing action. Hopefully it still turned out good.

Gackt paused in front of the hospital tent, grimacing at the smell and the groans of pain emanating from it. He hated setting foot in the hospital tents and preferred to avoid them unless injuries attained in battle landed him on a cot here. He had to go inside and tend to his friend though. Gackt took one last breath of fresh air and stepped inside. It was hot inside and white-clad nurses walked amongst the row of cots, tending to the injured men. Gackt knew that many of the soldiers in this tent would die from the wounds they had received in battle… or from the diseases that bred in these miserable conditions.

The soldier started to weave his way through the maze of cots, pausing every so often to say words of comfort to his injured comrades. He’d been fighting in this war for so long that he could tell the men who were unlikely to last the night apart from the ones who would live to fight another day based on their injuries. Is it worth it? Gackt wondered. Were all the lives stolen by the war and all the blood that had been shed worth it? What cause was worth breaking families apart and sending their sons to war? Before he’d enlisted, Gackt had believed the war was worth it and that being a soldier was the path to glory. He’d ceased to believe that a long time ago. There was nothing glorious about war. Every day was another fight through hell to survive. Gackt knew he was lucky that he was still alive, but sometimes he couldn’t help wondering why he was still breathing while so many of his comrades had fallen.

But not the most important one. Gackt stopped as he reached You’s cot and looked down at his closest friend. You’s eyes were closed, one partially obscured by the bandage wound around his forehead. Another bandage was wound around his right forearm, and Gackt frowned as he noticed that blood had soaked through the once white cloth. He sat down on the edge of the cot and took You’s hand, feeling responsible for the injury. You had kicked him down and taken the bullet meant for Gackt, earning the head wound when he’d lost his balance and fallen. His fall had saved his life though since the next bullet would have pierced his heart. Gackt shuddered at the thought and tightened his grip on You’s hand. He didn’t know what he’d do without You.

“You’re not allowed to leave me,” Gackt whispered. You had been at his side ever since they were five. They’d fought at first, but had soon become the best of friends. Friends who would do anything for each other… even something as crazy as You following him into war.

You stirred and slowly opened his eyes, blinking as he saw Gackt. “What are you doing here?”

“Checking on you. How’s your arm?”

“Sore, but at least it’s still attached. The bullet passed through cleanly so I’ll be able to shoot again once it’s healed.”

Gackt brushed You’s hair back from his face. “I don’t think you’ll be doing any of that for a while.”

You caught his hand and gave him a serious look. “I don’t care. I promised I’d be at your side for every battle.”

“You don’t need to follow me everywhere, You.”

“Yes I do.” You’s smile, although pained, was genuine. “Who else will make sure you’re not doing anything reckless?”

Gackt chuckled. “I suppose you’re the only one suitable for the task since my sister isn’t here.”

“Of course. She asked me to keep an eye on you.”

Gackt wasn’t surprised. “Someone else will have to watch out for me until your arm is better. Go back to sleep, You. I didn’t mean to wake you up.”

“Only if you leave so you can sleep.”

Gackt sighed. “I’ll try.” Sleep had become another enemy to fight ever since blood had started to drench his dreams. Faces of the dead floated through his dream along with the ever present sounds of gunshots and men screaming. He and You normally shared a tent and having each other around could keep the nightmares away, but Gackt would be alone tonight. He wanted nothing more than to get his best friend out of this reeking hellhole and back to their tent, but knew he couldn’t move You yet. He had to stay here.

“Go on, I’m not going anywhere.”

“You better not. I’ll ask a nurse to change your bandage.”

You shook his head. “Don’t. There are men with far worse injuries… the nurses are going to need the bandages for them.”

“But your arm-”

“Will be fine,” You insisted. “Stop worrying and go get some sleep.”

“I’ll see if I can.” Gackt got to his feet and after You smiled and waved him away with his good hand, reluctantly left the hospital tent.

Gackt pressed back against the dirt barrier as bullets whistled over his head. It felt strange not to have You at his side, not to feel You’s shoulder against his. He was so used to having You with him at all times that his absence felt like he was missing a limb. So Gackt was alone in a sense, alone without his best friend, but he had his fellow soldiers fighting alongside him.

He waited for the next wave of bullets to end before twisting around and returning fire. He saw two enemy soldiers go down before he ducked behind the barrier again, bullets flying over his head. Gackt studied the men around him as he waited for his next opportunity to open fire. Nine had already been killed, and Gackt knew the remaining men wouldn’t last forever. The enemy had the advantage here – they were slightly uphill and had a better angle towards Gackt’s company.

The soldier flinched as the man that had taken You’s place at his side suddenly slumped against him, dead from the bullet that had pierced his throat. Blood trickled out of the corner of his mouth as sightless eyes stared up at Gackt. He gently laid the man down and closed his eyes, silently praying for the soldier’s soul before picking up his gun again. Ten dead on their side. Gackt knew he had to come up with a plan. Shooting and ducking back beneath the barrier, as they were doing now, could only work for so long. Gackt didn’t know what else he could do though. Any man who attempted to charge the enemy soldiers would be gunned down before he could take a step. It seemed as if the only option was to continue to break cover, kill an enemy soldier or two if he could, duck down to avoid being shot…and repeat the same process.

Gackt aimed his gun towards the heart of an enemy soldier and pulling the trigger, swearing as the gun made an empty clicking sound. He crouched down to reload the weapon, accidentally dropping a bullet onto his leg. His fingers brushed against the one of the grenades strapped to his belt as he reached for the bullet. Gackt frowned and considered the grenade. If they detonated successfully, the grenades could save their lives. There was always a chance that the grenades wouldn’t work and he preferred to rely on his gun, which had never failed him. Gackt knew that a grenade would kill more of the enemy soldiers than simply shooting at them. If enough of his men threw grenades, the smoke would act as camouflage and allow them to leave the earthen prison behind. They could get to higher ground, gain the advantage in this battle, and finish the enemy soldiers down below. If the grenades worked.

Gackt decided to risk it. He carefully pulled the grenade away from his belt and nudged the man next to him, indicating the grenade in his hand. The soldier nodded and took out his own grenade. Gackt waited until three more soldiers had picked up on the silent message before pulling the pin out with his teeth and throwing the grenade. It flew over the enemy blockade and exploded immediately. Gackt hardened his heart against the agonized screams and threw a second grenade as his comrades added their own fire. Some of the grenades were shot down mid-air or failed to detonate, but others went over the blockade and soon thick black smoke and the screams of the injured and dying filled the air. The plan was a success; the enemy could no longer see them.

Gackt slowly rose to his feet and took advantage of the confusion caused by the grenades to leave the protection of the barrier. He didn’t wait for his comrades as he ran up the hillside and into the cover of the trees, taking shelter behind an enormous oak in case he’d been seen by the enemy down below. When no shots were fired at him, Gackt turned around to study the battlefield occurring at the base of the hill. Smoke from the grenades continued to veil his men and the enemy, making it hard to distinguish friend from foe.

The soldier sensed a presence nearby and dived behind the tree seconds before bullets struck the bark. He readied his gun as he pressed back against the tree. He twisted around to return fire, killing one soldier crouching behind a bush before ducking behind the oak again. There were four soldiers hidden in the foliage behind him… and who knew how many more were further ahead. Gackt took a step away from his shield to fire at the enemy again, aiming for the tall one beneath a maple tree. The bullet missed its target, and Gackt took cover before the enemy could return fire. Four against one were difficult odds to overcome, and he cursed himself for rushing up the hillside without waiting for his men. Rash actions like this would get him killed.

The next round of bullets was far too close for his liking. Gackt knew he couldn’t stay in this position for long. The soldiers would overwhelm him and leave a corpse behind if he wasn’t careful. Gackt broke cover again, targeting the closest soldier. The man went down as the bullet pierced his chest, leaving a patch of blood on the tree he’d used for protection. Two down, three to go. Gackt noticed two soldiers clustered behind the same tree before diving behind the tree again. He hadn’t moved quickly enough as a bullet grazed his arm, tearing through his sleeve and leaving a thin line of blood behind. Gackt prepared to turn around and open fire again, but held still as he remembered the successful use of the grenades at the base of the hill. If he could kill the soldiers behind the same tree, he could shoot down the final man and move to better cover.

There was one flaw with his plan. He only had one grenade left so if it failed, he’d have to continue this game of cat and mouse to kill the remaining three soldiers – unless an enemy bullet found his first. Gackt decided to risk it. He took out his last grenade, yanked out the pin and flung it towards the two soldiers. He dived behind the oak again and readied his gun, swearing as he heard no ensuing explosion. The grenade, and his plan, had failed. He stepped away from the tree and narrowly avoided being shot in the head. He crouched down and fired at the enemy soldiers he’d planned to kill with the grenade. He saw one go down before he pressed back against the tree, heart beating rapidly. Two soldiers left. Gackt broke cover again and aimed towards the closest soldier. The bullet pierced the man’s upper arm, but Gackt had to duck behind the tree again before he could make the fatal shot. The wound on the man’s arm would interfere with his ability to fire his gun, which would give Gackt a better chance to kill him.

Gackt prepared to break cover and finish the injured man, but didn’t get the chance. He’d been so focused on a single target that the other had gotten dangerously close. If Gackt hadn’t moved, he would have gotten a bullet in the back. The soldier quickly put the tree between him and his enemies again, waiting a few seconds before twisting around and returning fire at the man who had shot at him. He ducked back again as the other fired at him, waiting a few moments before stepping away and returning fire. This time the bullet pierced his throat and the man dropped with a nasty gurgling sound. Four dead… one to go.

The soldier stepped away from his barrier, frowning since the injured man wasn’t where he’d been before. Gackt heard a faint whistling sound and looked up, eyes widening as he saw a grenade flying towards him. He immediately broke cover and bolted, throwing himself behind a bush as bullets whistled past him. He heard the grenade explode and the sound of a branch breaking off, but didn’t turn back. He crouched down to avoid the next round of bullets and quickly crawled to the safety offered by another tree. He didn’t know how many grenades the enemy soldier had left, but knew he had to kill the man before he could throw the next grenade.

Gackt readied his gun and once again broke cover to shoot at the last soldier just as the second grenade struck the tree. It burst into flames and a branch broke off, striking Gackt’s shoulder. He staggered back from the force of the blow and dropped his gun. The first bullet went over his shoulder and the second grazed his leg as Gackt dove for the gun. He snatched it up and put three bullets through the man’s chest. The soldier dropped to his knees, one arm pressed over his chest in a vain attempt to stop the bleeding as the other fumbled inside his uniform. Gackt raised the gun again to put the man out of his misery. The soldier took a grenade out just as Gackt pulled the trigger, and he flung the grenade towards him seconds before the bullet finished him off. Gackt swore and ran in the opposite direction. He caught the toe of his boot on an exposed tree root, losing his balance and falling down the hillside. His roll was stopped abruptly when his head struck a rock, gun falling from his limp hands as his vision faded to black.

*   *   *

Gackt’s eyes slowly fluttered open and he stared up at the cloudy sky above him, feeling disoriented. What happened? Why was he lying on the ground? Why did he feel like someone had smashed a hammer into his skull? He remembered being on the hill, dodging behind trees to avoid bullets and shooting at enemy soldiers… then there had been the grenades and he remembered falling. He’d hit his head on something and then the world had gone black. Gackt froze as he remembered the enemy and wondered if they were still here, but couldn’t hear any gunshots. All he could hear was the sound of his own breathing.

The soldier started to sit up, but fell back against the leaves with a curse as a wave of dizziness struck. He didn’t try to get up again as he turned his head to see what had caused him to lose consciousness. The grey rock next to him had traces of blood on it, and Gackt’s fingers came away bloody when he reached up to cradle his aching head. He’d hit the rock hard enough to knock him out and make his head bleed. Gackt waited a few minutes before trying to sit up again. He moved slowly this time and was able to rise to his feet without another attack of dizziness. He saw his gun lying nearby and picked it up, scanning the forest around him. It was utterly deserted. Gackt needed to find his men again, but where were they? He didn’t dare call out and started walking, but the only signs of his men were the bodies left behind.

Gackt rubbed his aching head. He had to get back to base… but where was it? He remembered marching down a road with his men to get here and then they’d cut through the trees. But which way would lead him to the road? All he could do was keep walking until he found it. Gackt chose a direction and after a few minutes of walking, discovered a path that led through the trees. The forest had encroached on some of it and it wasn’t the road he’d taken here, but it was something. Gackt stepped onto the path and continued walking. It seemed to be leading him nowhere and he was about to turn back, but stopped as he saw a small clearing up ahead. A gravestone lay in the middle of the clearing and a weeping willow had been planted behind it, leaves brushing against the stone as if the tree itself was crying for the one who had been buried here. The leaves obscured the words carved into the stone and Gackt took a step closer to read the name, tensing as a flash of white caught his attention. He raised his gun, but lowered it as a girl emerged from behind the weeping willow. She wore a wedding dress with a crown of lace perched atop her blonde curls. Her veil was pulled back to reveal her beautiful face and a string of pearls hung around her neck. Gackt reached for the roll of bandages he kept in his uniform as she drew nearer. Blood stained the ivory fabric of her gown and veil and parts of the dress had been torn. There were cuts on her arms, and Gackt immediately drew closer so he could tend to her wounds.

“Lady? Are you… all right?” Gackt felt foolish for asking such an absurd question. She had clearly suffered grievous wounds.

The bride frowned as she looked down at the blood marring her dress. “All right?” she echoed. Her voice was deeper than Gackt had expected. He frowned as he studied the bride. He’d been so caught up with his concern for her injuries that he hadn’t noticed that there was something… wrong about her. She seemed to have no trouble walking despite the blood on her skirt. Her breathing wasn’t labored, there’d been no quiver of pain in her voice, and she didn’t appear to be in any pain at all.

“You’re dead,” Gackt realized. He tucked the bandages back into his uniform. He’d been able to see spirits ever since he’d nearly drowned as a child. It was a burdensome “gift” to have as few people believed he could truly see the dead.

“Yes, I am. I died from these wounds.”

“When did you die?”

“Years ago.” The ghost bride tilted her head as she examined Gackt. “You’re different from the other soldiers. So many pass through these woods, burning and shooting… but they never look. You’re the only one who has seen me.”

“I doubt any of them have my same ability. I’ve been able to see spirits when I was a child.” Gackt glanced back over his shoulder. He didn’t have time to be talking with a ghost. He needed to return to his comrades. “I’m sorry for what happened to you on your wedding, Lady, but I can’t stay.”

“Lady?” The ghost bride started laughing, but her laughter was so bitter that Gackt turned to look at her again. “I’m no lady.”

Gackt felt confused. “What do you mean?” She couldn’t be a man. Her voice was deep, but she was too small to be a man and no man would ever wear a wedding dress.

The bride smiled, but her smile was just as bitter as her laugh had been. “It doesn’t matter. You wouldn’t listen to me even if I tried to tell you my story. All you soldiers care about is war and your beloved guns.”

Gackt knew he had to choose his next words carefully. Spirits were not always willing to  let someone go. This one could force him to stay and listen to her story. “If you can show me where my men are, then I will return tomorrow and listen to your tale.”

The ghost bride looked skeptical. “Why should I believe you?”

“I promise that I will return. I hate breaking a promise.”

Gackt could tell that she still didn’t believe him. “Promises mean nothing. The man I loved promised that he would return to my grave with flowers every day, but he lied. He stopped coming years ago. If my lover can’t even keep a promise, then why should I trust a strange soldier?”

Gackt hesitated before reaching up and unfastening the clasp of the necklace that his sister had given to him the day he’d left for war. It was her favorite necklace and she’d made him promise that he would return and give it to her. It’d stayed with him through the long war, reminding him of home and the family he’d left behind. “This is my sister’s necklace. I promised I would return and give it back to her. I swear I will come back for this.” Gackt set the necklace in front of the grave and stepped back.

The skeptical look left the bride’s face and she nodded, pointing north. “I saw men wearing the same uniform as you that way. Follow this road and you’ll meet up with them.”

“Thank you.” Gackt turned away, but paused as she called to him.

“What’s your name, soldier?”

“Camui Gackt. Yours?”

“Hyde.”

Gackt frowned. Hyde? That didn’t sound like a woman’s name at all. And why hadn’t she given him a last name? He didn’t press her for details though.

“I’ll return tomorrow, Hyde.”

“I hope you do.”

Gackt left the clearing and glanced back over his shoulder. Hyde’s hand was resting on her grave, studying the stone with an expression of such sorrow that Gackt’s heart went out to her. He could only wonder what cruel twist of fate had taken her so soon from the world.

Notes
1) When I was writing the scene with Gackt and You in the beginning, they turned out to be more couple-ish than I'd intended. I'm trying to keep their relationship in the dream just like it is in real life: very close friends
2) Gackt won't find out that Hyde is a man until Chapter 3. If I used a male pronoun on accident and didn't catch it, please tell me
3) I'm being deliberately vague about some aspects of the war, like the time and who Gackt is fighting for. It is just a dream after all.
4) Care to guess who Hyde's lover is/was? Obviously, I won't tell you if you're right... but I might inform you if you're dead wrong.

PTTF, IT'S TETSUYA I SAY. >D Would have read this earlier, but was typing up some Evan. :D

Anyway, this was BRILLIANT! :D I loved how you wrote the battle scene!! Though, I caught a couple typos: you typed something like "there was no ensuring explanation"- did you mean explosion instead? XD You also repeated the sentence that started with "Gackt was about to break cover" twice. ^^;;

Anyway, to actually review lol, I didn't think Gackt and You came off as couplish, I got total BFF vibes from them, so no need to worry about that. :D Poor You, saving Gackt's life and all. :'D It was a really sweet scene, though I couldn't help but snicker at "You don't need to follow me everywhere, You," it just sounds funny in English. *giggles*

Also, I couldn't help but loling when Gackt mentioned "the lady" had a deeper voice than expected and when Hyde said he wasn't a lady and he was all "O_O?" Check under his dress if you want to make sure Gackt. ;D Also, wanted to point out I thought it sounded a bit odd Gackt kept calling him "Lady", as I thought he would use "Miss" instead. And the whole idea that Ghost!Hyde is actually a man surprised me as I thought you were going to keep him a woman? As now, instead of being a dead bride, he's a dead crossdresser. LOOOL. /insensitive to maiden Hyde's feelings. I really love his character so far though, he's very mysterious and ghostly. XD I look forward to hearing his tale!

Also, since Hyde himself said he was a man/nonlady, continuing the usage of "her" is a bit awkward, the English nerd in me is all "PRONOUN ERROR, DOES NOT COMPUTE." XD

This was an awesome chapter! I liked the detail you put in abot the war, and you wrote the action really well. Don't worry, I saw Gackt's and You's relationship as just very close friends :) The part where Gackt walked into the clearing was my favourite, the image of the gravestone and the weeping willow was beautiful to me, though very sad as well.

I can't wait to find out what Hyde's story is~! And I'm going to say Hyde's lover was Sakura.

Finally, I finished this! An awesome way to celebrate the end of my preliminary exams too. ♥

I loved G and You's part in this. I don't they're too couple-ish at all, since I believe that's how they act around each other irl too. ♥

The scene on the battlefield was great too. Perfect visual formed in my head. ♥

I know Hyde's a man (lol, duh) but, iunno, he comes off as quite feminine here, to me. It's the way he phrases things, imo.

As for the old lover, I just hope it ain't Tetsuya because I really can't stand that pairing, lol. I'm guessing it's either Sakura or maybe another Gackt? :P

They are a pain to write but I love the deets that you put into it. It made it so much more real. ♥

I know that wasn't your intention but it sort of came off that way, to me, anyway. :B

I think it's Tetsuya because I know you're a TetsuHai/Haitetsu shipper too, lol.

I have one question I think.
"Gackt was about to break cover and shoot the injured man, but didn’t get the opportunity. Gackt prepared to break cover and finish the injured man, but didn’t get the chance."
--> did you intent on writing it like that or is it a mistake? Because you basically say the same thing twice and I don't hold anything against saying something repeatedly, but with this it seemed like you changed the words and forgot to erase the other part. ^_^" but it's probably just me. xD

and I didn't really have the 'Gackt and You are a couple' vibe, so it's okay. ^_^

Yes, what can I say, I love it. And finally I had some time to read it. xD ehem. ^_^" I know it took me long enough, but hey, no you can get more comments in one go!! xD

off to the next. ^_^
