Author's Comment: Once again, I had a hard time writing/editing this but the next chapter should be much easier to write. I'm at the halfway point now! Thanks to everyone for your patience and I will do my best to have the next chapter out this week.

“What are you two going to do here?” Jun-ji asked as they reached the town. “And don’t tell me you’re going back to the records room. You need to do something fun for a change and looking through dusty old records is anything but.”

“We are going to the records room again,” You said.

“And the cemetery.” But first, Gackt needed to buy flowers and incense to lay at the graves of Hyde and Tetsu’s parents. Hyde’s parents had died long after their son, and Gackt had a feeling that their graves hadn’t been tended to in years. He assumed the graves of Tetsu’s parents would be in a similar state of neglect, but wanted to confirm his suspicions.

Jun-ji gave him a strange look. “You want to go to the cemetery on our free day? Why? You don’t know anyone who died here.”

I know Hyde. Gackt said nothing of the ghost though. “It’s something I want to do.”

“What are you looking for in the records room? You’ve been there twice now.”

“There’s some local history I want to look into,” Gackt said vaguely. You was the only person he’d told about Hyde. Jun-ji, even though he was a good friend, didn’t know about Gackt’s ability to see spirits and he didn’t intend to tell him. He’d trusted You with his secret years ago because he knew You would believe him, but he wasn’t positive that Jun-ji would.

“And you’re dragging You along?” Jun-ji cast the other soldier a pitying look. You almost always followed Gackt and his wild ideas, something he’d been doing for years.

“I’m not dragging him. He’s coming with me willingly,” Gackt corrected. He would never force You to do something he truly didn’t want to do.

“He’s buying me dinner and dessert if I come with him,” You said. Gackt smiled a little. You had always been easy to convince – all Gackt had to do was treat him to whatever he wanted to eat and then You would do whatever he wanted.

Jun-ji shook his head. “Thinking with your stomach as always.”

You laughed. “I think it’s worth it since I get a free dinner and dessert.”

“Make sure Gackt buys you a good dinner.”

“I will.” You waved and followed Gackt into the nearby shop that sold candles and incense. He purchased a few sticks to burn at the graves and tucked them into his uniform. All he needed now were the flowers. They left the candle store and walked to the flower shop where Gackt purchased two bouquets of roses – one for Tetsu’s mother and one for Hyde’s.

“Do you need help carrying anything?” You asked.

Gackt was perfectly capable of carrying the flowers, but understood that You was desperate to do anything useful. He was still incapable of fighting due to his arm and he was frustrated with his inability to do anything. He tried to put on a cheerful act, but Gackt knew You and saw right through him. “Take these.” He handed You one of the bouquets and led the way, leaving the shops behind and going past the old church and into the cemetery. There were more graves than he had expected, making him question the logistics of his plan. Would he have enough time to find the graves of Hyde and Tetsu’s parents, look in the records room, and see Hyde today? He couldn’t risk being in the forest at night. If he ran out of daylight, he’d have to see Hyde early in the morning instead.

“I’ll search this side and let you know if I find their graves,” You suggested.

“All right.” Gackt took the other side and studied the dates on the graves, passing by the oldest ones dating back to the start of the town. Once he reached graves from the late 1800’s he started walking down the lines of tombstones, searching for Takarai or Ogawa. It took him a while but finally he found a grave marked with Takarai showing their names and the dates of their deaths. They’d died a few months apart from each other and the dates seemed to fit in with what little he knew of Hyde’s parents. The grave had no flowers or any trinkets left by a loved one. It was clear that no one had been here in years. Gackt placed the flowers in front of the gravestone and set the incense sticks near them, lighting the sticks and straightening. He felt like he should say something, even though he could detect no trace of a spiritual presence. Hyde’s parents had moved on long ago. He knew the ghost would be happy that his parents hadn’t shared his same fate.

“I’m trying to help your son. He was taken from this world far too soon and doesn’t deserve to be trapped here, haunting the forest forever. I want to help him move on and reunite with his loved ones. I hope both of you are proud of your son. He’s very brave to still be able to smile after enduring so much heartache and loneliness. Hyde is a wonderful man, and I wish I could have met him when he was alive. Rest in peace.” He stepped back from the grave and turned around, looking for You. He found him stopped in front of a gravestone several rows away from where he stood. “Did you find Tetsu’s parents?” he called.

You started. “No, not yet. I thought I did but I read the name wrong. Have you found Hyde’s parents?”

“Yes, they’re buried right here.” Gackt indicated the gravestone.

“I’ll keep looking for Tetsu’s parents.”

“So will I.” Gackt stepped away from the stone and continued his search for Tetsu’s parents.

“Gackt! I found them,” You called. The soldier joined his friend in front of the stone. Like Hyde’s parents, Tetsu’s parents’ names had been engraved into a single stone and the grave looked just as neglected as theirs had been. It was obvious that no one had been here in some time, reinforcing Gackt’s belief that Tetsu, like Hyde, was no longer on this earth. You laid the roses in front of the grave and Gackt lit two sticks of incense for the deceased. He had no real connection to Tetsu’s parents, but had a feeling that Hyde must have liked them since he’d been so close to their son. Looking at the grave, Gackt wondered for the thousandth time where Tetsu had gone and why he hadn’t come back to tend to Hyde or his parents’ graves.

“I need to look in the records room one more time so do you want to eat and then help me find the articles I need, or do you want to go to the record’s room first?” Gackt asked.

“I’ll eat after we’re done in the records room. What else are you trying to find?”

“I’m looking for articles about how Hyde’s murderers died and if I can find it, anything about Tetsu.” Gackt wasn’t sure if he would find anything about Hyde’s lover in the newspaper, but couldn’t think of anywhere else to look. He needed to know Tetsu’s side of the story so he could help Hyde achieve his peace, but if he couldn’t find Tetsu then there was little he could do.

* * *

Gackt sorted through folders in the filing cabinet and took out the folder marked with the year Hyde had died. He laid the newspapers on the table and examined the dates, looking through them until he found one that had been published two months after Hyde had been killed. The unusual deaths of three of his murderers would have captured the attention of the townspeople, especially since two of the dead were the mayor’s sons. He skimmed through the articles, pausing as he found an article about the murders. There was no picture, merely the headline “Town shocked by strange deaths.”

Once again our town has had to face a string of shocking deaths. Three of the men accused of murdering Takarai Hyde have been found dead in the forest. The mayor’s sons were out on a hunting trip and after they didn’t return, a search party was sent out to find them. Their bodies and the corpse of their friend were discovered together. There is no blood or visible wounds upon the bodies. Strangest of all, each man died with finger-shaped marks branded into the skin at the throat or the wrist, but strangulation was not the cause of their deaths. It is a mystery as to how they died and as of yet no suspect has been named in the deaths. The trial would have taken place tomorrow, but with three of the suspects dead it has been postponed until after the funeral.

Gackt frowned and read through the article again, remembering his conversation with Hyde.

“How did you kill them?”

“I wanted them to die slowly and painfully in the same way they murdered me, but I can’t hold a weapon.” Hyde had looked disappointed by this fact. “I killed the men by pulling their souls from their bodies.”

Gackt hadn’t asked how the ghost had done that since he truly didn’t want to know, but perhaps Hyde just had to touch a man to take his soul.

“Did you find the article?” You asked. Gackt pushed the newspaper towards him and wrote down the information in his notebook while You read. “I don’t think you should see Hyde again.” His friend was frowning, clearly upset by what he’d just read. “This article is proof that it’s not safe to be with him. He killed three men in this and then another one later! Aren’t you worried?”

“I was when Hyde told me what he did to his murderers, but he reassured me. He said the only people he had a reason to kill are his murderers and that I’ll never have to fear death at his hands.”

“But what if he gets attached to you and changes his mind?” You shot back, voicing his old worries that had been haunting him ever since Gackt had first told him about Hyde and his desire to help the ghost. You had never fully trusted Hyde and this had only made his suspicions worse.

“He’s not going to.”

You shook his head. “I still don’t believe that.”

“But I do,” Gackt said. “Stop worrying about me, You. I’ve already told you I have nothing to fear from Hyde.”

“So he says. Do you trust the word of a ghost?”

“I do.”

You frowned. “I still don’t think you should see him again. It’s too dangerous.”

“We’ve already had this conversation. I’m going to keep seeing Hyde because I made a promise to help him and I’m not going to break my promise.” Gackt had made his point and it was up to You to continue the argument or back down and accept the fact that Gackt wasn’t going to change his mind.

You sighed. He knew how stubborn Gackt was and how pointless it was to argue with him once he’d decided to do something that You didn’t approve of. “Just be cautious, all right.”

“I will.” Gackt replaced the newspaper in its folder and changed the subject. “Have you found anything about Tetsu yet?” He’d asked You to look through newspapers from five years after Hyde’s death, the year Tetsu had stopped coming to his grave.

“Not yet.”

“Keep looking for articles about him. I don’t know if we’ll find anything, but it’s worth a try. I’ll see if I can find out what happened at the trial.” He wanted to know if Hyde’s remaining murderers had been arrested for their crime or not.

You nodded and returned to his stack of newspapers. Gackt continued to read through the pile in front of him, wondering if the men had been tried and arrested for their crimes. Hyde would want to know if they’d been imprisoned for murdering him. Finally, five newspapers after the one where he’d read about the deaths of the three men, he found an article about the trial.

Four months ago, Takarai Hyde was brutally murdered when he was in the forest with Ogawa Tetsu. Tetsu survived his injuries and named the mayor’s sons and two of their friends as his attackers. The trial was postponed after the deaths of three of the suspects, but it has resumed and the attackers will serve a sentence of twenty-five years.

“They were arrested,” Gackt said, writing the information down in his notebook. He’d filled its pages with notes about Hyde and his story, guesses about Tetsu and what could have happened to him, and his own thoughts about the ghost. Sometimes he would spend hours thinking about Hyde when he couldn’t sleep after a nightmare and had organized his thoughts in his notebook. It helped, but he still had so many questions and the only chance of answering them all was to find Tetsu.

“For how long?”

“Twenty-five years. They were lucky; they could have been executed for murder.”

“One of them was,” You reminded.

“Don’t start this again.” Gackt shot him a look. He was done arguing about whether it was safe to visit Hyde or not. “Have you found anything yet?”

You shook his head. “No, I don’t think I’m going to.”

“Just keep looking, there might be something. I’ll help you once I’ve put this folder back.” Gackt tucked the newspapers back into their folder, making sure they were in the right order before replacing the folder in the filing cabinet. He’d barely closed the drawer when You called him over.

“Gackt, come here!” The soldier joined him at the desk. There was a section of every newspaper devoted to births and marriages, if any had taken place during that installment of the paper. Two weddings had occurred during this particular installment. Gackt spared the first wedding a brief glance before turning his attention to the other. This was the article he’d been looking for. It was longer than the description for the first wedding, which Gackt understood. Tetsu had survived a murder attempt and lost his dearest friend in the process. Seeing him move on with his life would be a sign that anyone could. There was a photograph of Tetsu, a little older than he had been in the photo at Hyde’s grave, but he looked happy and had his arm around a pretty woman in a wedding gown. Gackt studied the picture, knowing that there should have been an article about Tetsu and Hyde’s wedding… but such a story would never make it into the newspaper. You shifted the paper towards him so he could read the article.

Five years after the murder of his closest friend, Tetsu has found happiness. Here he stands with his new wife Ayana. Her father was a business client, and Tetsu was immediately charmed by his daughter. They married at sunset in the church. The couple will be moving to Mayfield to begin a new life away from tragic memories and to further expand the business that Tetsu has inherited.

“He left this town behind and started a new life,” Gackt said, sighing for Hyde’s sake. He would be devastated when he learned that Tetsu had truly abandoned him. “Where he moved isn’t too far from here. We could-”

“No, Gackt,” You interrupted. “I’m not going to disobey orders and go to another city to help Hyde. We stay here until we get a new assignment.”

Gackt couldn’t deny the truth of that statement, but felt frustrated that answers to his questions could be so close but he might as well be on the other side of the world.

* * *

“Will you come to Hyde’s grave with me tomorrow?” As promised, he’d treated You to dinner and dessert and had refrained from making his request until they were back on base. “I’ll leave early in the morning and be back in time for training.”

You looked surprised at the question. “No. I know you’re convinced that Hyde is a gentle spirit, but he’s killed four people. I can’t believe he’s as harmless as you say he is. There would be no point in bringing me anyway since I can’t see the dead. I’m not like you.”

“He’d appreciate the company.”

You shook his head. “I’m not going to change my mind. Look, you’ve done all you can for Hyde so why don’t you just focus on keeping yourself alive? You can’t afford to be distracted when you’re in combat, and I know Hyde’s always on your mind.”

“I know.” Distractions were deadly, but Gackt had been in enough battles that he knew how to focus solely on the fight instead of letting his thoughts wander in other directions. He was tempted to press the subject of visiting Hyde, but didn’t. He wouldn’t be able to get You to change his mind – yet. He’d have to find a way to convince his friend that aside from the murders, Hyde was truly just a lonely ghost.

“There you are. I’ve been looking for the two of you.” Gackt and You saluted as Chacha, their commanding officer, walked up to them. They’d been a part of his squad since the beginning and the three had developed a friendship. Chacha was a good leader, a man that Gackt was proud to follow.

“Was there something you wanted to tell us?” he asked.

“Yes. We ship out tomorrow and head north to help our troops fight back the enemy.”

Gackt froze. He was leaving… tomorrow? But what about Hyde and his investigation? He couldn’t help Hyde when he was a different part of the country.

Chacha tilted his head, frowning as he studied Gackt. “Is there a problem with your new assignment?”

Gackt shook his head and made an effort to control his expression. “No, it’s nothing.” He glanced at You to see how he would handle the news. He looked relieved. A new assignment would keep Gackt away from Hyde, which was what You had wanted all along. “What time will we leave tomorrow?”

“Nine o’clock.”

Gackt nodded. If he left just after dawn, he’d have enough time to talk to Hyde and return to base in time to pack and prepare for the move to his new post. He winced a little as he imagined how Hyde would take the news of Gackt abandoning him. This would not be permanent though. He didn’t know how long he would be at his new post, but he’d find a way to see Hyde again and keep his promise.

NUUUU GACKT CAN'T LEAVE! DX THERE'S SO MUCH TO BE DONE! HYDE'S TOTALLY GOING TO LOSE IT! EVEN MORE THAN WHEN GACKT TELLS HIM TETSU WENT OFF AND MARRIED SOMEONE ELSE AND FORGOT ALL ABOUT HIM! I have a really bad feeling he's going to go all Angry!Ghost on Gackt's ass. Which is NOT going to be pretty. OH IT'S SO SAD.

And I'm mad and then not mad at Tetsu at the same time. I totally understand why he would want to move on, that's normal, but actually getting married to another chick is what bothers me. If it was a guy, I think I would feel better about it. >.>;;;

And You, LEAVE HYDE ALONE! YOU HAVEN'T EVEN MET HIM AND YOU'RE JUST ASSUMING HE'S EVIL JUST CUZ HE KILLED THE PEOPLE WHO HAPPENED TO KILL HIM, LIKE THAT'S COMPLETELY INSANE OR SOMETHING. GET A GRIP! *smacks You*

Also, ChaCha as commanding officer lol? He's so pretty! :'D Reminds how much I MISS GACKT JOB. *sobs everywhere*

Okay, think that was all I had to spaz about. OFF TO BEDZ! XD

Oh I know, just being dramatic. XDD I can see that now. O_O;;

EXACTLY! Acting like he never loved Hyde is just so messed up! DX Ah, yeah I guess.....well, it wouldn't have to be a JRock person (I can't see Tetsu with anyone besides Hyde either, ick), I thought you could have just made someone up. *shrug* LOL, just the idea might possibly collapse the universe. |D

HE'S BEING A DOUCHE. >:C Though I understand his ultimate need to watch out for Gackt, but Gackt knows what's he's doing! >:D

I can actually picture it nicely now. :D Totally agree!! I'm not really feeling YFC though....like I liked The End Of The Day and all, but it's not on my iPod or anything. XDD

LOL, HydeRage, I like that term. :D

*nod nod* AGREED. Really, OCs are fun since you can make them anyway you want. :D

EXACTLY. XDD

They did, it's just not something I get an urge to listen to. *shrug* OH A HYDE YASU DUET WOULD BE SWEET!! I like Yasu's voice, had Janne De Arc and Acid Black Cherry for awhile. :DDD

Yay for update, but Gackt has to leave? D: Poor Hyde, he certainly won't take this very well, especially if Gackt tells him what he found out about Tetsu...

Gackt studied the picture, knowing that there should have been an article about Tetsu and Hyde’s wedding…

I want to go over and cuddle with Hyde for the bad news he's gonna get. *hugs*

and Gackt too actually, because he really wants to help him. -___- of course they'd have to leave... well at least they found out about Tetsu already. that's something good right? Well 'good' isn't the right word, since Hyde's going to be so sad to know he's remarried.

I like You. Seriously. He's cute. *giggles* He would actually have become best friends with Hyde at another time, cause they can both be food-bribed. xD They'd be good friends, simply because of that I guess. So get over the 'he's killed people' phase, You. He's a ghost. Be glad he isn't more vengeful. xD
