Summary: Hyde gives Tetsu two important gifts for his birthday in 1993 and thinks about where he wants to be 20 years later. 2011 is two years short of that, but Hyde has everything he wants.
Author's Comment: Happy belated birthday to our dear leader! I'd hoped to finish this sooner, but school got in the way...
October 3, 1993
Hyde fussed with the ribbon on Tetsu’s present as he watched Ken hand their leader a neatly wrapped box. Today was Tetsu’s birthday and practice had been delayed so they could give the birthday boy his presents. The four of them were crammed onto the same shabby couch in the studio to watch Tetsu open his presents, and Tetsu had the bow from Sakura’s present stuck in his hair.
He took the box and shook it, frowning and giving Ken a dirty look. “You better not have gotten me a porn magazine like you did for my birthday last year.”
Ken cackled. “That was a gag gift! I wish I’d had my camera, the look on your face when you saw it was priceless.” He playfully elbowed Hyde, who was sitting next to him. “What’d you think of the girl on the cover?”
Tetsu groaned. “Ken, don’t start this.”
Hyde looked at Sakura to see if he had any idea what was going on, but the drummer looked just as clueless as him. “What was so great about her?” And why had Ken elbowed him?
Ken smirked. “She looked just like you. Except she was actually a girl, not a pretty boy like you.”
Hyde’s jaw dropped. “Ken!” he smacked the guitarist’s arm. “You bought Tetsu a porn magazine because the cover looked like me?!” He’d never been so mortified in his life.
Ken laughed at the look of horror on the singer’s face. “It was funny! Now calm down, she wasn’t the only girl in there.” He turned back to Tetsu. “Didn’t you think she looked just like Hyde?”
Tetsu chose not to respond and tore off the wrapping paper. He opened the box, looking relieved as he pulled out a bright scarf and a gift card to his favorite restaurant instead of another dirty magazine. “Thank you, Ken. I’m glad you restrained yourself this time.” He smiled and set the gifts next to the shirt that Sakura had bought him.
“You’re welcome.” Ken ruffled his hair, careful not to dislodge the bow, and smirked again. “You didn’t answer my questions though. What did you think of her? And doesn’t she look just like Hyde?”
The singer pouted and smacked Ken’s arm again. “Stop it, I don’t want to hear about a porn star that looks like me!” He couldn’t believe Ken had given Tetsu a magazine like that.
Tetsu huffed. “I didn’t want to look at a porn star that looks like Hyde because I’d think of him, not her. And they look similar, but not identical.” He took the bow out of his hair and set the wrapping paper aside, making it clear that that particular conversation was over.
“Here’s my gift, Tet-chan.” Hyde handed Tetsu his gift, hoping the other would like it. Figuring out what to give him had been hard. He’d wanted to buy the perfect present since Tetsu meant a lot to him. The leader had shared his dream with all of them by founding L’Arc~en~Ciel. In recruiting Hyde, he’d helped him achieve his own dream of being a successful musician… and made him realize that he made a much better singer than a guitarist. And Hyde had realized a few months ago that he was in love with Tetsu. Because of all that, Hyde needed to buy Tetsu the perfect gift. There was just one problem though. He didn’t have the money to buy Tetsu the perfect gift. In the end, he’d decided to draw him a birthday present. A homemade gift was often better than something bought in a store, right?
Tetsu pulled the ribbon off the box and tore the paper away before opening the box. Hyde watched him, feeling anxious as Tetsu took out the drawing that he’d spent the last week laboring over and ensuring that it was absolutely perfect. He’d drawn Tetsu in his element, the bassist on stage in his favorite stage costume. “I wanted to buy you something, but I didn’t really have the money… and you’ve always liked my drawings so I thought I’d draw you in my style.” Hyde smiled a little. “You can look back on this in twenty years and laugh at how different your style was.”
Tetsu looked touched by the simple gift. “Thank you, Hyde.” He carefully set the drawing back in the box and leaned over Ken to give the singer a hug. “I’ll frame it and put it in my room.”
Hyde breathed a sigh of relief as he returned the embrace, wishing Ken wasn’t in the way. “Good. I was afraid you wouldn’t like it.”
“Why wouldn’t I like it?” Tetsu released him sooner than Hyde would have liked and looked at the drawing again. Ken and Sakura leaned in closer to study it.
“He looks great, Hyde. Just like him! I bet you wished he had shorter hair though,” Ken chuckled.
Hyde laughed. “It was a little hard to get the right color for your hair.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Well… I didn’t know if you’d be annoyed that I drew you something instead of buying you a present. I didn’t want you to think that I didn’t care about your birthday.”
“It’s unexpected, but it’s a wonderful gift.” Tetsu smiled. “I wonder what we’ll look like twenty years from now… and what your drawings will be like then.”
Sakura snorted. “I bet there will be less makeup.”
Ken gave Hyde’s long hair a playful tug. “I see haircuts in the future.”
“Ow!” the singer smacked Ken’s hand away, pouting as he got up and moved to sit by Sakura instead. “Don’t pull my hair.”
“Ken, you know Hyde doesn’t like it when you mess with his hair.” Tetsu stood up. “Now let’s practice for next week’s live and make sure our fans will still want to come see us in another twenty years.”
There were a few grumbles about having to practice already, but they all went back to their positions anyway. They all wanted to be with L’Arc in another twenty years. Hyde grasped his microphone stand and glanced over his shoulder, wondering if today would finally be the day he confessed his feelings to Tetsu.
* * *
Hyde lingered in the studio after practice was over. As he was singing, he’d been thinking about the future. Twenty years was so far away, but he knew where he wanted to be then. He wanted to be singing for L’Arc~en~Ciel and he wanted to be Tetsu’s lover. He didn’t want to be alone or with someone else twenty years later and wonder what would have happened if he’d been brave enough to tell Tetsu he loved him. Those thoughts had given him the courage to confess his feelings. He walked up to Tetsu, who was putting his gifts in his bag.
“Wait, Tet-chan. I have one more present to give you.”
Tetsu looked surprised. “You do? Why didn’t you give it to me when Ken and Sakura were here?”
Hyde blushed. If he’d given Tetsu his last present in front of them, Ken would tease him forever. “It’s not something I could give in front of them.”
Tetsu frowned. “You’re not going to give me a dirty magazine, are you?”
“No! Only Ken would do something like that.” Hyde hesitated as he looked up at Tetsu. Today would make him happy or it would crush him. Either way, he had to know if the leader returned his feelings or not.
“What is it then?”
Hyde took a deep breath and willed himself to be bold. “This.” He cupped Tetsu’s face and leaned in to kiss him. They’d kissed for fanservice before, but this was different. There was no audience of screaming fangirls here. It was just the two of them and this kiss wasn’t for the girls. It was for Tetsu. It was for himself, to finally admit the feelings he’d been harboring for months. Hyde slowly pulled back from the kiss when Tetsu didn’t respond. “I… I love you, Tet-chan. I want to be your lover.” It was utterly cheesy to kiss Tetsu and tell him about his feelings on his birthday, but if Tetsu kissed him back… then it would be worth it.
The singer bit his lip at Tetsu’s silence. Had he just done something incredibly stupid? He’d seen how Tetsu’s eyes lingered on him when he was changing in and out of his stage clothes, how Tetsu would look at him when he thought Hyde wouldn’t notice. He wouldn’t look at him like that if he wasn’t interested, right? “Say something,” Hyde whispered, bracing himself for the leader’s words. Which would it be – heartache or happiness?
Tetsu smiled. “And you didn’t want to kiss me because you thought Ken would tease you?” He wrapped his arm around Hyde’s waist and pulled him closer to him. “What are you going to do next time?”
The singer’s heartbeat quickened. “What are you saying?”
Tetsu chose to reply in a nonverbal manner. He turned Hyde’s face up and kissed him again. The singer tangled his fingers in Tetsu’s hair and kissed him back, pulling away a few moments later. “Does this mean you love me?”
“I do.” Tetsu stroked Hyde’s hair. “I’ve seen you looking at me when you think I won’t notice, and I do the same thing with you. I didn’t want to say anything because of the band-”
Hyde silenced him with another kiss. “We can talk about the serious things tomorrow,” he said firmly. “It’s your birthday and we both love each other. I don’t want this to be spoiled by a serious conversation.” They could talk about how their new relationship would affect the band and what they would tell Ken and Sakura tomorrow. But for now, they could simply enjoy Tetsu’s birthday and the knowledge that they each shared the same feelings for each other.

October 3, 2011
“Happy birthday, Tet-chan!” Hyde beamed and tugged his lover down for a kiss. He’d wished him that a few times already, but repeating the birthday wishes wouldn’t hurt and so far Tetsu was having a wonderful birthday. Now that the live was over, they could go home and have a more private celebration.
Tetsu pulled him into his arms and kissed him back, holding him close and deepening the kiss. They hadn’t had much time for each other today since they’d been busy preparing for the live and having a group celebration for Tetsu’s birthday, but they had a few moments to themselves in the dressing room. Ken had held Yukihiro back and warned him that it was dangerous to go inside. Hyde had given him the finger and tugged Tetsu in after him.
Tetsu broke the kiss first, panting softly as he leaned his forehead against Hyde’s. “Do you remember what you gave me when I turned twenty-four?”
Hyde smirked. “How could I forget? I gave you me, isn’t that the greatest gift of all?” He swayed his hips teasingly as he slid Tetsu’s hands down his body.
“Of course it is.” Tetsu grinned and pressed him closer. “But you gave me a drawing too.”
Hyde cringed. “Don’t tell me you still have it.” He’d told Tetsu to take off the wall a couple years after he’d moved in with him since looking at the old drawing was painful. Tetsu had protested, but had finally agreed and Hyde was happy not to have seen it since that day. He was afraid to look at artwork from so many years ago.
“Of course I do! I loved that gift; I’d never get rid of it.”
Hyde made a face. “I need to redraw it then.” It’d been eighteen years since he’d made that drawing, plenty of time to improve.
“I still remember what you said about looking back and laughing at how different we look twenty years from then. It’s not quite twenty years since you gave me that, but we certainly have changed our style a lot.”
Hyde ran his hands through Tetsu’s short black hair. “I like you better with the hair you have now.” He smiled. “Did you think about where we would be twenty years from then? I wanted to still be in L’Arc and I wanted to be with you.”
“I wanted the same thing.”
“Good, I don’t see that changing in another two years.” Hyde pulled Tetsu down for another kiss, ignoring Ken as he knocked on the dressing room door.
“Will you two stop making out? I want to change! Go home and celebrate there instead of hogging the dressing room.”
Hyde broke the kiss and smiled wickedly. “I like the sound of that. I do have one more present to give you, Tet-chan.”
Tetsu looked excited. “Oh? Will I like this present?”
“You’ll love it,” Hyde promised. Good thing they had a chance to sleep in tomorrow. He had a feeling he’d need the extra rest.
Before anyone asks - NO SEQUEL. Use your imaginations! I'm sure there will be ribbons involved so Tetsu can properly unwrap his birthday present. I have a different NC-17 Tetsu x Hyde started anyway and have no plans to start another.

Date: 2011-10-07 07:33 pm (UTC)I love writing Ken as the blunt perv. It seems like something he'd do. He totally gave Tetsu that magazine to mess with his mind since he knew Tetsu liked Hyde XD (I'm sure he'd rather dream about the real thing)
Tetsu's a little suspicious since Hyde did give him one last gift after everyone else had left. I'm sure Ken will buy him a dirty magazine the next year just for old times' sake haha.
I certainly did when I was bored at work yesterday!
