Author's Comment: It felt a little surreal as I was editing because this is the last chapter of A Soldier's Dream. I've been working on this fic since July and now that it's over... it definitely feels strange. Thank you to everyone who has kept up with this fic and been patient with my slowness :)

“Gacchan!” Gackt felt a warm hand pushing his shoulder, similar in size to the one pulling him into death. He struggled against both hands, vaguely aware of hitting something soft. “Ow!” the warm hand released him after the protest of pain.

“Let me go,” Gackt mumbled, trying to break free from the ghost who still clutched his hand. Hyde had succeeded in pulling him through the door, but if he could escape he could get back to the forest and find a way to enter his body again. The ghost flickered in front of him as he felt something hard strike his chest.

“Gacchan! Wake up!” That same voice called.

Gackt’s eyes snapped open and he found himself lying in bed. The forest and the icy hand that had gripped his were gone. Instead, he saw Hyde leaning over him. There was a red mark on his cheek and he looked annoyed as he cradled a large book in his hands. Hyde. Gackt immediately shot out of bed, putting distance between him and Hyde and stepping into a defensive stance.

“Stay away from me.”

Hyde looked startled. “Calm down, Gacchan. You were having a bad dream so I had to wake you up. I don’t know what you were dreaming about, but come back to bed and talk to me.”

Gackt didn’t move, studying Hyde and his surroundings to prove that this was reality. He could feel his heart beating, hear his intakes of breath. The trickling sound of the fountain and the sight of the pictures on the wall proved that he was at home. Home in Tokyo. Home in 2008. He wasn’t a soldier fighting in a forest during World War II and getting murdered by the ghost he’d tried to save. And Hyde… Gackt looked at his lover. Hyde was sitting in bed where he’d left him, just as naked as Gackt was since they’d had sex before going to sleep. His brown hair was ruffled, sticking up in a few places. Gackt always loved Hyde’s bedhead since he looked so cute with his messy hair. Hyde looked so different from the blood-stained bride in the forest. No, in his dream. It had all been a dream.

Slowly, Gackt came back to bed and sat down next to Hyde. “I’m sorry I reacted that way. I had the most vivid dream.”

The singer set the book down and rubbed his cheek. “It must have been.”

Gackt frowned and caught Hyde’s hand. “What happened to your face?”

“You hit me when I tried to wake you up.”

Gackt was appalled. “I hit you?” He had never struck Hyde before. Sometimes it was tempting when they were having bad fights, but he always restrained himself because a real man didn’t hit his lover. Gackt would never say this to Hyde’s face, but striking Hyde would be like hitting a woman since he was so much smaller than Gackt. “I’m so sorry.” He stroked Hyde’s cheek, hoping the red mark would fade quickly since it was like the symbol of a crime.

“It’s okay. You were just dreaming.”

Gackt pulled Hyde into his arms. “That’s no excuse.”

“What were you dreaming about? I woke up because you were holding me so tightly, then you started talking and thrashing in your sleep. I tried shaking you awake, but that didn’t work.”

Gackt noticed the book that Hyde had been holding was still on the bed. He remembered something striking his chest and realized it was this book that had woken him up. An English dictionary – no wonder one strike from that had pulled him out of the dream. “And so you hit me with a book to wake me up. How vicious of you,” he teased, lying back against the pillows and bringing Hyde into his arms again.

“Well you hit me first,” Hyde huffed.

“I know.” Gackt kissed his cheek. “And I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine, you were having a nightmare.” Hyde laid his head on Gackt’s pillow and looked up at him. “Do you want to tell me about your dream now?”

“It was based on our costumes. You, Jun-ji, Chacha and I were soldiers in World War II and you were a ghost in a wedding dress.”

Hyde wrinkled his nose. “I was a girl in your dream?”

“No, you were a man.”

“In a wedding dress?”

“Are you going to let me talk?”

“Yes,” Hyde said, smiling sweetly.

Gackt started at the beginning. Visiting You in the hospital, fighting, meeting Hyde, promising to help him, hearing his tragic story… Hyde pressed closer, but said nothing as Gackt described how Hyde had been murdered. He stroked Hyde’s hair and kept speaking. The singer listened in silence until Gackt mentioned his first trip to the records room where he’d found Hyde’s obituary and the newspaper article about his murder.

“Wait – you dreamt I was married to Tet-chan?”

“Yes, and he was a bad husband because he disappeared five years after your murder and never came back to visit your grave.”

Hyde chuckled. “I’ll tell him he’s a bad lover when I see him later today.”

Gackt kissed his forehead. “Do you want to hear the rest?”

“I do.”

He pressed Hyde closer as he described the rest of the dream. Fighting in battles, returning to visit Hyde, more trips to the records room to piece together the events of Hyde’s life and death. “You killed four of the men who murdered you.”

Hyde frowned. “How did I do that? I was a ghost.”

“You ripped their souls out of their bodies.”

The singer’s eyes widened. “I did?”

“Yes.” Gackt stroked Hyde’s cheek. “You was afraid you’d get too close and do the same to me.”

Hyde wrinkled his nose. “That wouldn’t be a good way to repay you for helping me.”

Gackt smiled sadly. “No, it wouldn’t.” He considered leaving out the fact that Hyde had killed him, but decided to continue since it’d just been a dream after all. The real Hyde would never hurt him. He continued, talking about his meetings with Hyde, his first transfer, the pain of watching You get shot… finding out that You could see Hyde,  the transfer to Mayfield where he’d found out what happened to Tetsu, discovered that Tetsu had never stopped loving Hyde, and learned he’d fallen in love with Hyde. “And then I came to you with the poem and Tetsu’s will. I thought I’d found a way for you to finally move on, but you had other plans.”

“What were they?”

Gackt let out a heavy sigh. “You killed me, Hyde. You’d fallen in love with me and took my soul so I would be with you forever. That’s why I was struggling in my sleep and why I jumped away from you when I woke up.”

“Oh, Gacchan.” Hyde frowned and stroked his hair. “No wonder you were afraid when you saw me.”

“Yes.”

Hyde chuckled. “I feel like me killing you is becoming a theme. You had me take your life in Moon Child and I did the same in your dream.”

“I can’t control what I dream,” Gackt huffed.

“But you are the one who write wrote Moon Child,” Hyde reminded as he traced the taller man’s collarbone, smirking. “I did enjoy practicing that scene.”

“Of course you did, you little vampire.” Gackt tickled him. “I thought the marks would never fade.”

Hyde laughed and swatted his hands away, becoming serious again. “Is the dream still upsetting you?”

“A little.” Gackt smoothed his lover’s bangs away from his face. “I thought your spirit would fade away… I knew I’d be sad to see you go, but at the same time I wanted it because you deserved to be free. I didn’t expect you to take my soul.”

The singer smiled. “If I die before you and become a ghost, I promise I won’t rip your soul out.”

“Hyde! Don’t joke about that.” Gackt didn’t want to imagine a world without his lover.

“I was only trying to lighten the mood.” Hyde pouted and snuggled closer to him, muffling a yawn behind his hand. “Let’s go back to sleep. It’s only four in the morning and we didn’t get to bed until one.”

Gackt shook his head. The dream had been so vivid that he didn’t want to go back to sleep and see what else his imagination would concoct for him. “You sleep; I’m going to get some work done.”

“You need to sleep more,” Hyde grumbled.

“I have too much to do.” Gackt leaned down to kiss him. “I’ll bring my Mac to bed if you want to sleep next to me.” That allowed him to stay in bed with Hyde and be productive.

“Good.” Hyde curled up under the covers. Gackt got out of bed and put on comfortable clothes before leaving the room to get his computer. He returned with the Mac tucked under his arm and got back into bed with Hyde, putting a few pillows behind his back to prop himself up. He then sat down and placed the computer in his lap. Hyde shifted closer to him, and Gackt draped his arm over the singer’s back.

“Go back to sleep.”

“Will you be here when I wake up?”

“I will.” He’d answer emails and continue working on tour plans while Hyde slept. Then once he was awake, he’d exercise.

The singer closed his eyes. “Will you sing to me, Gacchan?”

“Of course.” Gackt started singing one of L’Arc’s songs, nudging Hyde playfully as he started to sing along with him. “I thought you wanted to sleep.”

“I can’t help but sing along when it’s one of my songs,” Hyde pouted, yawning again and shifting into a more comfortable position. He closed his eyes and was quiet as he listened to Gackt sing, opening his eyes again once the song had ended. “Gacchan?”

“Do you want me to sing another song?”

“Well, I do, but that’s not what I’m asking.”

“What is then?”

Hyde looked up at him. “You don’t have some subconscious fear that I’ll leave you for Tet-chan, do you?”

Gackt frowned. “No. I’ve never been worried that you would leave me.”

Hyde smiled. “Good. I just wanted to make sure since you did dream about me being married to him.”

“We fell in love with each other in the end though,” Gackt reminded.

“That’s true.” Hyde closed his eyes once more. Gackt combed his fingers through his tired lover’s hair as he sang him another song, listening as Hyde’s breathing gradually slowed to the gentle rhythm of sleep. He hoped Hyde’s dreams would be sweeter than his own.

Gackt turned back to his computer and watched the screen as he waited for it to load. Everything about his dream had been so vivid that it was hard to believe it wasn’t real. He’d been able to feel everything so clearly… the pain he’d felt when he’d watched You get shot, how every transfer had killed him because he had to be away from Hyde again. How he’d fallen in love with the ghost Hyde just as he’d fallen for the man sleeping next to him… until Hyde had dragged him into death. Gackt shivered and tried not to think about the dream’s dark ending. He was grateful that Hyde had woken him before You could come looking for him. He didn’t want to know how You would have reacted to finding his best friend’s body in the clearing.

Again, Gackt pushed the negative thoughts away. Despite the dream turning into a nightmare at the end, parts of it had been pleasant. He’d enjoyed the majority of his time with Hyde, and You had been his best friend just like he was in reality. Gackt decided he would take You out to lunch later today as a reward for being such a good, loyal friend in a dream.

Besides, he’d never had a chance to treat You to the lifetime of dinner and desserts that he’d promised him. It was only fair that he take You out to lunch today. But before he could go to the studio, he needed to get work done so he would have something to show his band mates.

Notes
1) I'm not overly satisfied the ending, but I didn't know what else to do so I've decided to cut it off there. I had toyed with the idea of writing a scene where Hyde tells Tetsu about the dream and another of Gackt telling You... but it seemed unnecessary so I've decided not to write that.
2) I think I'll take a break from Soldier and finish another story or two before I write the alternate ending. The alternate ending is going to be two parts: a different version of chapter 11 and the epilogue. If it's not out this month, then I guarantee it will be early next month.
3) Side-stories: Not counting the alternate ending, I have four side-stories in mind for this. Two are sweet and centered around Gackt in Hyde's clearing, while the other two are depressing and I'm not sure if I'm going to write them or not. The depressing ones are 1) You finding Gackt's body and 2) the night Hyde dies. If I don't end up writing the second scene, I will at least write something with living Hyde and Tetsu together.
4) Again, thank you to everyone who read and commented! There were a few times I just wanted to give up and put this story on hold for a while and work on other stories, but I didn't want to leave my readers hanging so I kept working on Soldier until the very end.

Gackt would never say this to Hyde’s face, but striking Hyde would be like hitting a woman since he was so much smaller than Gackt.

LOOOL XD
Yes, never said it out loud Gackt!

I like the part where Hyde asked Gackt about the Tetsu thing :) It always nice to know how they love each others deeply ♥

Two parts of the alternative ending would be perfect since it will be a very different scenes if Gackt wake up not with horor feeling ne ^^
Thank u for finishing this story n can't wait for another GxH stories!! ♥ ♥

*icon is necessary cause really I laughed when you wrote Hyde was sitting in bed where he’d left him, just as naked as Gackt was since they’d had sex before going to sleep ... it came so out of the blue. xD

I think it's good you ended it there. Scenes where they tell their friends would have been unnecessary I think, but you already stated that so... xD

I loved this btw, it was so endearing. Loving and teasing at the same time, from both of them. ^_^ really lovely. I'd like to have that kind of Hyde laying next to me in bed. xD (well any kind of Hyde would do, but this is super adorable)

aww.. please bring yourself to write the less happy sidestories? I'd like to read the night Hyde died and also when You finds Gackt, but especially the scene where Hyde dies, actually. ^_^" But I understand if you don't want to write them. ^_^

you, slow?? where did you get that? I take YEARS to finish multi-chapters. *guilt is very tangible and still I don't do anything about it*

Aww, I really loved the ending ♥ I know I've mentioned it before, but you write Gackt and Hyde perfectly, with the light-hearted teasing and the sweetness~

I can only imagine how it'd feel to wake up to the person who just killed you in a dream, especially when it was someone you love. But it's good Gackt came back to reality quickly, that dictionary did its job, lol.

My favourite part was when Gackt started singing for Hyde and Hyde sang along, it was such a cute scene, and something I can see happening in real life <3 Thank you for writing this story, I really enjoyed it, and it's going in my memories ♥

Oops, forgot to mention the side-stories, obviously really looking forward to them as well~

I think it was about time I read this, LOL. And it was perfect! :'D It was really sweet and made me smile (I lol'ed when Gackt said, "Of course you did, you little vampire. I thought the marks would never go away." XD) I also laughed at the "I was a woman? >:O" "No, you were a man." "In a wedding dress? O.o" "ARE YOU GOING TO LET ME TELL THE STORY OR NOT?! " XDD Hyde's reactions were perfect and he asked all the right questions! :3 Hitting Gackt with a dictionary was pretty genius idea though. And I also thought it was cute when Gackt felt bad for accidentally hitting Hyde in the face. :'D (And LOL Hyde would totally have a bitch fit if Gackt called him a woman.) My only qualm is that I think if you ended it at "He'd hoped Hyde's dream would be sweeter than his own" it would sound more ending-ish. I actually thought that was the end and was surprised to see more text! XD

But anyway, this was a fantastic story, definitely the most creative fanfiction I've read in a really long time! :DD I enjoyed every bit of it as you know and am sad that's over. D': The plot and everything was amazing and I look forward to all your other fics!! <333

Lool I know. Welcome! I love the banter between them, it's too funny. XDD I would hope so! XD Good thing Gackt doesn't have extreme reflexes or Hyde would have been knocked across the room or something. X'D Yeah I think that's a normal reaction, especially since he left a mark. ^^;; (INDEED. XD "Hon, I didn't mean it like that, I- D:" "I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT! DX NO SEX FOR A WEEK AND THAT'S FINAL!") I know what you mean, ending and starting a fic/chappie is always the hardest for me too. ^^;;

Me too lol! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE, LIKING THIS COUPLE AND ALL. XDD That's true!! Thanks! :D

He would, probably would cradle Hyde in his arms holding an ice pack on top of his head. XD That's true! :O (Well, that would be fun! :D)

EXACTLY. NOW WE'RE EVEN. 8D
