Author's Comment: For being such a short fic, this story has given me hell since the day I started it back in August. I was finally able to finish it today though.

Kei was dreaming again. He was on the beach with Luka, watching his companion as the older vampire looked up at the sky… waiting for the sun to rise.

“Don’t leave me!” he pleaded. Without Luka, he would be alone. There was no other vampire to keep him company, no one else to ease the pain of being a monster. At times Kei resented Luka for taking his humanity, but the older vampire had become so important to him that Kei couldn’t imagine life without him. How could he go on without Luka?

“I have to. I can’t live this half life any longer.”

“I’m here for you. We can do it together,” Kei insisted, but Luka shook his head and continued to watch the sky. The blackness of night was fading as the orange glow of the sun crept over the horizon. Dawn was dangerously close. Kei automatically prepared to run. He hated being a vampire, hated having to feed off of others, but he wasn’t ready to welcome the sun’s fiery embrace and die yet. He needed to drag Luka off the beach and into the safety of the darkness before it was too late. Before the sun took both of their lives. Before…

Kei started awake as the door opened. He was breathing heavily, haunted by the familiar nightmare of Luka’s suicide. He’d tried to stop Luka, tried to get him to stand and come away with him… but in the end Luka had died on the beach, and Kei had been alone until he met Sho. Sweet Sho who had stopped him from killing himself and brought joy into his life again. It was his scent at the door, and Kei was grateful he’d come at this time. He didn’t want to see Luka die again this week.

The vampire rubbed his face and rolled off the couch. He could hear Sho trying to be quiet as he shut the door and took off his shoes. He was always so considerate – unlike Shinji who tried to make as much noise as possible since he knew Kei would be asleep. “Sho? You don’t need to be quiet. I’m not sleeping,” he said as he went over to the door. He frowned as he saw the dejected look on the child’s face. “Sho?”

“Hi,” he said quietly. He didn’t smile as he saw Kei, didn’t rush into his arms for a hug. Something was wrong. Sho was always happy to see him, but not today.

Kei’s alarm deepened as he saw the tears welling up in Sho’s eyes. The vampire crouched down so he was at eye level with the child. “Sho? What’s wrong?” He didn’t know what had happened, but immediately felt a protective rage. Whoever made Sho cry would pay. No one messed with his kids.

“Nothing,” Sho mumbled.

Kei sighed. “You don’t cry over nothing, Sho. Tell me what happened.”

Sho sniffed again as the tears started spilling down his cheeks. “Kei…” he threw his arms around the vampire’s neck and hugged him tightly. “Am I a freak?”

Kei started. “What makes you think that?”

“T-The other kids said I was because I have blue eyes. They said I don’t look Japanese and that I’m not normal,” he whispered, clutching Kei tightly.

The vampire wrapped his arms around Sho and held him close. Despite his rough life as a street kid, Sho was sensitive and easily affected by the cruel words of others. Those blue eyes that made him so unique frequently drew taunts from the other children that lived near them.

“They’re wrong.” Kei wiped Sho’s tears away. “Having blue eyes instead of brown doesn’t make you a freak. I’m Japanese too, even though I have blonde hair and green eyes.  Would you say I’m a freak because I don’t look the same as everyone else?”

Sho shook his head, still looking miserable. “No…”

“Then why would you call yourself one?”

“Because they kept saying I was a freak.”

“So you’re going to listen to them instead of me?”

“No…”

Kei took the child’s hands. “Having blue eyes makes you unique, Sho. And it’s better to be unique than to be ordinary, isn’t it?”

“I guess so.”

Kei smiled. “Good. So don’t let some idiots’ words get to you. People are cruel and that unfortunately is never going to change. All we can do is learn to ignore them.”

“Is that what you do when Shinji insults you?”

Kei’s smile faded. Shinji always glared at him, refused to call him anything but “that monster” and didn’t want Toshi or Sho to be alone with him. “Yes. Your brother will never like me, but I don’t expect him to so I don’t let his words hurt me.” Freak, monster - all the insults Shinji hurled at him were ones he’d heard many times before.

Sho squeezed his hands. “Do you like my blue eyes?”

“Of course I do.” He loved everything about Sho.

The child beamed. “Then as long as you like my blue eyes I don’t care what anyone else thinks.”

“Good,” Kei smiled, glad that Sho was happy again. He stood and ruffled the child’s hair. “Besides, once you grow up I bet the girls will love your blue eyes.”

Sho blushed. “Really?”

“Really,” Kei said.

Sho hugged him again, looking up at him. “Thank you, Kei. I bet those kids made fun of me because they’re jealous that they all look the same.”

“I bet they are. Do you want me to make you some lunch?”

“Sure!” Sho grabbed his hand and led him to the kitchen. Kei followed, glad that Sho was happy again. He didn’t like when the child was sad since Sho was the ray of sunshine in his otherwise dark life. He couldn’t always make Sho happy, but he would always be there for him when Sho was sad and find a way to put the smile back on his face.
