Summary: Kiyoharu takes Hyde to Sakurai Atsushi's annual Halloween party in an attempt to cheer him up. Hyde goes along but guilt over enjoying himself so soon after leaving Sakura makes it hard for him to enjoy himself.
Author's Comment: Phew, didn't think I'd finish this in time. I wrote this in the span of one weekend and have spent the last several days editing it. I hadn't planned to write this but Kiyoharu demanded a fic and Atsushi demanded one too. Brats. Chronologically this is set in a series of linked one-shots I'll write at some point but the rest of the story isn't needed to understand what's going on.
“Hyde? Are you here?”
“I’m in the kitchen.” Hyde put the last bowl in the cupboard and turned around. If only Sakura, not Kiyoharu, was asking that question. He sighed then reminded himself that he’d done the right thing. Even though it hurt. Despite Hyde begging Sakura to quit heroin he’d continued using the drug and other painkillers. He knew the risks, knew he’d lose Hyde if he kept using, but couldn’t stop. The artist didn’t want to be trapped with his lover’s addiction so had made the difficult decision to leave. It’d been three weeks since that day and the breakup still hurt. Sometimes he was crying on the couch when Kiyoharu came home. He never asked questions, just did his best to comfort Hyde. At times the artist felt like he was a burden but was grateful that he could live with Kiyoharu until he was strong enough to get back on his feet. Breakups were hard enough; dealing with them alone would be a nightmare.
A tired-looking Kiyoharu walked into the kitchen. He’d had the opening shift at the tattoo shop they worked at and hadn’t gotten enough sleep. Hyde had expected that so brewed a pot of coffee for him. “Oh, coffee. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” The artist poured him a mug then handed it to him. “How was work?”
“Good.” Kiyoharu brushed his messy brown hair back as he sipped the coffee. “You’ll like this: three people complimented my butterfly and said they’d love to meet the artist.”
That got Hyde to smile. After the breakup Kiyoharu had encouraged him to get a tattoo, saying it would help him feel like he was in control of his life again. Hyde had been hesitant at first since that was such a permanent method of regaining control. He’d started drawing though, deciding he wanted wings on his back. After that it was a matter of choosing what type of wing. He’d been torn between devil and angel wings but finally picked angel. Once he’d made his decision, Kiyoharu took him to the shop so he could ink the wings into his back. It’d hurt like hell but Hyde loved the tattoo.
“I’m glad it’s loved.” A few days after giving him the wings Kiyoharu had asked him to design a tattoo for him. That was complicated since he already had several. Hyde had started sketching, trying to make something that would fit with the colors and tattoos that Kiyoharu had. In the end he’d liked the butterfly and star Hyde designed so asked him to give him both. The artist was happy to see his work was appreciated.
“Me too.” Kiyoharu sipped his coffee. “Are you doing anything this weekend? My boss is hosting his annual Halloween party on Saturday. Do you want to come?”
Hyde blinked. “Our boss?” An annual party – or party of any sort – didn’t fit with the man’s character. Even though he was covered in tattoos he thought parties were boring.
Kiyoharu snorted. “Yeah, right. Can you imagine him at a party?”
“No,” Hyde admitted. He tried to think of who else the other could be talking about. Then remembered. Sakurai Atsushi owned the tattoo shop and a few other businesses. He’d always found it a little strange that Kiyoharu referred to him as his boss even though he wasn’t directly working for the man. “Is that Sakurai Atsushi's party?”
“I’m surprised you remember him,” Kiyoharu said. “You’ve never met him.”
Hyde smirked. “You look like a starry eyed fanboy whenever you talk about him so of course I remember.” He laughed at Kiyoharu’s indignant expression, smile fading as he remembered the Halloween party he’d gone to with Sakura last year. He’d only think of his ex-lover and be miserable if he went to this one. “Thanks for the offer but I’ll stay here.” He was in no mood to celebrate so why be the downer at the party? Curling up on the couch in pajamas, eating popcorn, and watching a horror movie would be a better way to enjoy Halloween.
“Why?”
Hyde sighed as he rubbed his arms. Why was Kiyoharu asking such an obvious question? “I’m depressed, you’d be bored if I came with you, and I don’t have a costume.”
“You’re not boring.” Kiyoharu frowned. “I know you’re sad about Sakura, but he wouldn’t want this for you. He wouldn’t want you to sit on the couch and be miserable. Or eat your weight in dessert.” He laughed and dodged the dish towel Hyde threw at him.
“I’m not eating my weight in dessert,” the artist complained. Okay he did eat half a container of ice cream earlier but that was because he’d dreamt about Sakura. His ex-lover showed Hyde he didn’t have track marks then said he’d given up heroin and wanted to be with him again. Just as they were about to kiss, the artist woke up… and realized he was alone.
Kiyoharu didn’t look convinced. “Do you think it’s too soon to have fun?”
“Yes,” Hyde replied. Going to a party felt… wrong. Like he didn’t care about Sakura.
Kiyoharu sighed. “It’s your life so I won’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. Just promise me you’ll try to move on someday. When you’re ready. Sakura wouldn’t like to see you constantly moping over him. He’d want you be happy.”
Hyde bit his lip. Sakura had said something similar when the artist wouldn’t give him another chance to get clean. “I… I guess so,” he whispered. He wrapped his arms around himself as he thought of the night he’d left Sakura. Both of them had been miserable as Sakura tried to convince him to stay. Once he’d seen that Hyde’s mind was made up he’d told him that he deserved better than an addict and that he should make a good life for himself.
He glanced up as Kiyoharu spoke again. “If you don’t want to go, I won’t ask you again.”
Hyde pushed his black bangs back. “Give me some time to think about it.” It was only Monday so he had enough time.
“All right.” The taller man ruffled his hair. “Let me know what you decide.”
“I will,” Hyde promised.
* * *
“Where’s the party being held again?” Hyde asked. In the end he’d agreed to come, mostly for Kiyoharu’s sake. Part of him wanted to go since he knew he should start living again while a more pessimistic part was angry that he was taking steps to move on. In spite of his conflicted feelings he looked forward to the party.
The taller man reached into his kimono and took out the invitation. “It’s in a nightclub about a block away from here.” He showed Hyde a map on the back of it, pointing out where they were now and where the party was being held.
“All right.” Hyde blinked as a passing driver whistled at them. That had to be for Kiyoharu since there was nothing sexy about his witch costume. He’d borrowed a striped shirt from the other man, rolled the sleeves up to his elbows, then bought a sleeveless black dress to wear over it. Striped pants and brown boots went under it. His accessories were his hat, the pumpkin ring on his finger, black arm warmers, and the colorful extensions pinned into his black hair. Kiyoharu, dressed as a courtesan in a green kimono designed to fall off his shoulders with a red and yellow obi, had definitely been the target of that whistle.
He smirked as he acknowledged the whistle then tucked the invitation back into his kimono. “We’re close. Even you should be able to hand the walk.”
“Of course I can, it’s just a block. I’m not that lazy,” Hyde grumbled.
“Says the one who had to be carried up to my apartment when the elevator broke.”
“We missed the last train and had to walk back! My feet were killing me.”
“I know, you kept complaining.”
“We had to walk too far. And you were rushing to get home.”
“Because it was raining.”
“So? You have longer legs.”
“…Your point?”
“I’m short! I had to walk faster to keep up with you.”
“And you’re lazy.”
Hyde’s last retort died on his lips as he remembered similar ‘arguments’ with Sakura. He hated how everything reminded him of his ex. It was best to change the subject since the memories were twisting his heart. “What do you think the party will be like?”
Kiyoharu looked thoughtful. “That depends on the theme. Atsushi was obsessed with Egypt last year so had an ancient Egyptian theme. He’s on his usual vampires and demons kick so I’d expect death-like elements this year. No matter what the theme it’s a standard Halloween party. There’s a dance floor, the bar, food, ghostly lights… it’s always held in the same club so he can make his dramatic entrance on the stage.”
Hyde nodded. He’d have liked to see the Egypt party… maybe Kiyoharu had pictures. He’d ask him later.
It didn’t take much longer for them to reach the club. The artist smiled as he saw the line of costumed people outside. Three men dressed in Grim Reaper uniforms and holding clipboards stood guard in front of the elaborate double doors. They were painted black with thick gold rings serving as door handles. This wasn’t the exterior he’d expected a nightclub he had. The inside must be amazing. Hyde watched as the Grim Reapers checked invitations and, presumably, IDs then stepped aside so the guests could enter. Kiyoharu told Hyde to get his ID ready as they took their place in line.
Once they reached the men, Kiyoharu handed the invitation and their IDs to the Grim Reaper closest to them. “Kiyoharu and Hyde,” he said. “Hyde is my guest. His name should be next to mine.”
The man checked the invitation and then his name list. “It is.” Next he examined their IDs. Once he’d done so he studied their faces next to ensure they matched the cards. “Have a good time,” he said as he returned the items.
Hyde gave him a shy smile then followed Kiyoharu inside, blinking as he saw a red carpet stretched across the entryway and leading into the club. Skull and coffin shaped lights surrounded the carpet, lighting up a path for the guests. Expensive-looking chandeliers were placed throughout the room. The right side of the room was clearly reserved for drinking and dining. Guests were seated at the bar and served by men in vampire costumes. Two large tables covered in food were positioned at either end of the bar. Smaller, claw-footed tables were scattered throughout that side of the room so guests could sit and eat. Hyde was dying to sample some of the food. He smiled a little as servers dressed in Grim Reaper robes walked around with trays of food or drinks or empty ones to accept the guests’ plates and glasses. He took a step towards one, but Kiyoharu gently steered him to the left side of the room. This was a dance floor and the floor, not the couples, caught Hyde’s attention. The floor was made from white tile with red or black diamond-shaped tiles sprinkled among it. Some couples or groups of friends were already dancing on it. The tiles reminded Hyde of dancing on a giant chess board. He glanced up to see ghosts and fake bones dangled from the ceiling along with the occasional pumpkin or glittering skull. He didn’t envy the people who’d decorated.
“Do you want a drink?” Kiyoharu asked.
Hyde was distracted by the stage. It was behind the dance floor lined with white candles. A huge chandelier hung above the stage, illuminating the ribcage shaped microphone stand at the center of it. Bones on strings dangled from the ribs but some had red patches on them. Like blood. No doubt Atsushi would make his entrance here.
“Hyde?”
“Yes,” the artist replied, glancing up at him. “We should get drinks and wait here. I want a good spot so I can see.”
Kiyoharu nodded. “Good plan.” He led the way towards a server with glasses of red wine on his tray. Once they had their drinks they headed towards the stage. Guests were already gathering there but they found spots near the center of the stage. Hyde studied the costumes as he sipped his wine. Some were lavish and had probably cost a fortune while others were simpler. His fingers itched to draw some of the more elaborate costumes. Halloween was his second favorite time of the year. He loved decorating his apartment, designing and shopping for costumes, going to haunted houses, and wearing a costume. It was fun to be someone else for a few hours. Someone different. Someone happier.
“Kiyo-chan,” Hyde looked up at him. “What’s going to be happen?”
The taller man shrugged, absently adjusting the kimono as it fell off his shoulders. “I’m not sure. It really depends on what costume he’s wearing since he gets into character. I’m betting vampire or demon, but we’ll see. No matter what he wears he’ll make a grand entrance and announce the party.”
“What’d he do last year?”
Kiyoharu chuckled softly. “He had the club decorated like an Egyptian tomb. The stage was set up as the underworld and he made his grand entrance by stepping out of a sarcophagus.”
“Oh.” Again Hyde wished he could have been there. At least he was at the club now… he wondered if it’d be possible to talk to Atsushi. He seemed like an interesting man. The artist studied the stage to see if there was any sign of movement but so far nothing. He jumped as the dance music and lights suddenly went off. Hyde craned his neck and stood up on tiptoe. Skull lights were being lowered onto the sage and low organ music began to play. Hyde blinked as the stage was obscured by smoke. Next he heard wailing voices like the souls of the damned. He stood up a little taller as a figure started to appear in the smoke. A man dressed in a white Victorian dress shirt with thick lace cuffs, black pants and a black cape slowly came into view. He had straight black hair down to the base of his neck and carried a cane topped with a skull. The wailing and organs faded to silence and Hyde glanced up at Kiyoharu, smirking since he had the starry eyed look again.
“You’re doing it,” he whispered, turning his attention back to Atsushi so he wouldn’t miss anything.
“Doing what?”
“Looking like a fanboy.”
Kiyoharu elbowed him in response but didn’t say anything. Hyde smirked. Definitely a fanboy in denial.
“Welcome, mortals, to my Halloween party.” Atsushi laid one arm over his chest and bowed in a theatrical manner. “I’ve left my home in hell and taken this form to present tonight’s party. The interactions of humans are so fascinating to my kind so eat, drink, and enjoy these few hours. The sun is fatal to me so I must be long gone before dawn.” Atsushi was speaking in old, formal Japanese that required some extra thinking to interpret his meaning. He straightened up then smirked as he looked around the guests. “You may enjoy the party until the sun rises if you so desire. I need blood to replenish my strength so I shall leave you now.” His smirk widened. “Mind your souls and take care not to give in to the demons.” He laughed darkly then covered himself with his cape, disappearing into the smoke.
Hyde joined the others in clapping, trying not to drop his wine glass in the process. He’d expected Atsushi to talk more but with an entrance like that who needed words? He glanced up at Kiyoharu again to see him watching the stage still.
“I’m surprised his speech was so short. Usually he’ll talk more about the theme or the decorations.”
“Maybe he was in a hurry to celebrate.” Hyde would be if he were in Atsushi's place. Being in the spotlight had never been an enjoyable experience so he’d have been eager to leave the stage too. Besides there had been no need to describe the decorations or the theme since both, unless Hyde was missing something, were obvious.
“That could be. He loves his parties.”
Hyde nodded but was distracted by a server collecting empty glasses. “I’ll take care of these.” Then they could get food.
“Thanks.” Kiyoharu handed him his wine glass so Hyde could give them to the server. Once he’d done so he returned to his friend, who was giving him a knowing look. What was that all about? “I’m guessing you’re hungry now.”
Hyde grinned. “Of course.”
Kiyoharu patted his shoulder. “That’s because you’re always hungry.”
Hyde winced as he followed Kiyoharu. Sakura always used to say things like that… he couldn’t help but wonder what his ex-lover was doing now. If he was at a Halloween party or at home. If he still lived in the apartment they used to share. If he was shooting up or trying to quit again. If he was thinking about Hyde and wondering where he was, what he was doing. Maybe he should just call Sakura? No… he’d told the other man not to get in touch with him until he was clean. If they spoke, Hyde wouldn’t be able to resist going back to Sakura. Then he’d be trapped in the addiction nightmare again. He had to keep his distance. Sometimes it was so hard not to call Sakura though since Hyde missed him so much. At least he had Kiyoharu to help him stay strong. Without the other man he probably would have cracked and gone back to Sakura by now.
Distracted with his thoughts, the artist didn’t pay attention to where he was going and promptly bumped into someone. Hands fell to his shoulders to steady him so he wouldn’t stumble back. Hyde glanced up, blushing as he realized he’d run into Atsushi. This wasn’t how he’d hoped to meet the other man. “I’m sorry,” the artist apologized. Up close he could see the party’s host was older than him and very good-looking. He wore red contacts with a cat pupil and had a string of rubies clasped around his neck. They gave off the eerie illusion that someone had just slit his throat. Well, he was probably going for that look since he was a demon tonight…
“It’s all right.” Atsushi gave him an amused look then smirked. “You should watch where you’re going. Demons don’t like being crashed into… even by pretty little witches.” Hyde shivered as Atsushi slowly trailed his long nails up his neck then smoothed his bangs back. With that hand so close to his face Hyde could see his nails were painted a reddish-black shade that reminded him of dried blood. “Do I know you, little witch? It’d be a shame to forget such a pretty face.”
Hyde blushed again. “No, we’ve never met before.”
“Pity,” the other replied. “I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.” He bowed again then straightened, giving the artist a playful smile before kissing the back of his hand. That made Hyde blush even more. People still did that in this day and age? Maybe Atsushi was just being in character. That seemed unlikely though since demons weren’t prone to being gentlemanly. He started as the other man spoke again. “Does my pretty little witch have a name?”
“I’m Hyde,” the artist said. He considered stepping back since Atsushi still had his hand on his shoulder, but didn’t want to be rude.
“Are you here with a coven or lover, my dear witch?”
Hyde blinked. That was an odd question… but Atsushi was being in character there. “I’m with Kiyoharu.” Where had his friend gone? He looked around then saw his green kimono by one of the food tables. Kiyoharu seemed to be looking for Hyde too since his eyes were scanning the club. He caught side of the artist and they both waved. He turned his attention back to Atsushi, getting a little nervous as he saw him smirking. He’d obviously witnessed the exchange.
“You didn’t give me a proper answer. Is Kiyoharu your lover?”
Hyde’s face probably matched Atsushi’s ruby necklace with that question. “No,” he squeaked. “We’re just friends.”
Atsushi didn’t seem convinced. “I see,” was his dry response. Then he smirked. “If ever my little witch needs a demonic partner, I would be more than happy to oblige.”
“Stop harassing Hyde,” Kiyoharu complained. He pulled the artist away from Atsushi, making him jump at the touch. When had the other man come over? Well, he’d come just in time since Hyde was starting to get uncomfortable. He’d also brought food.
Atsushi huffed. “I wasn’t harassing him.”
Kiyoharu handed Hyde the plate, still keeping his hand on his shoulder. “You were making sex euphemisms.”
“I’m in character. Demons and witches get along well.”
“Hyde’s a good witch; he won’t summon or interact with demons.” Kiyoharu rubbed the artist’s back. “So this one’s off limits.”
“I’m not reserved for him though,” Hyde said hastily when Atsushi looked like he was going to speak.
The party host smirked. “I struggle to believe that since he’s being so… protective of you.”
Hyde glanced up as Kiyoharu brought him a little closer. He was protective because he cared about the artist. And because of Sakura… “You have to look out for Hyde now.” He smiled a little as his friend looked at him. “Kiyo-chan is my good friend. Even witches need friends that aren’t fellow witches,” he added, smiling sweetly.
Atsushi laughed. “All right.” Then he gave Kiyoharu an annoyed look. “Why didn’t you bring him to my dinner party three weeks ago? Hyde would have made it more interesting.”
Hyde winced as he thought of three weeks ago. “It… wouldn’t have been a good time. I had a lot going on then.” That was an understatement. He’d spent most of this time curled up on Kiyoharu’s couch drinking or crying or both. He sighed then ate some of the sushi Kiyoharu had brought him. Hopefully Atsushi wouldn’t want details. He wasn’t ready to share such personal information with a man he’d just met.
“He was busy then,” Kiyoharu replied as he glanced at Hyde. “You’d love his dinner parties. All that free food and alcohol… I’d have to stop you from ordering everything on the menu.” He grinned at the glare he received then turned his attention back to Atsushi. “I did plan to introduce you two at some point tonight. You’ve already met though.” He took a piece of sushi off of Hyde’s plate, making the artist pout.
“Hey! Don’t steal food after saying I’d be a fatass,” Hyde complained. Hopefully this would distract Atsushi enough that he wouldn’t ask what had kept the artist so busy three weeks ago.
Kiyoharu snorted. “I’m the one who got that food for you.”
“You should put a curse on him for taking your sushi, Hyde.”
The artist chuckled. “Maybe I should.” He shifted the plate away so Kiyoharu couldn’t reach it then glanced at Atsushi. He looked amused as he watched them. Even though he’d made Hyde a little uncomfortable earlier he seemed friendly enough. As long as he didn’t delve too deep into his demon character they should be fine. Maybe Kiyoharu’s presence would encourage Atsushi to restrain himself. “I like your theme. And your entrance was really good.”
Atsushi’s face lit up. “Thank you. I’d planned something longer and more dramatic but was… persuaded to go with something shorter.” He frowned and adjusted his ruby necklace. “It was good though? Not too short?”
“It was perfect,” Kiyoharu said.
Hyde nodded. “The theme speaks for itself.”
Atsushi relaxed. “I’m glad to hear that.” He glanced between the pair, looking thoughtful. “If Hyde isn’t your lover then what is your relationship?”
The question caught the artist off guard. He was about to respond when Kiyoharu spoke. “Hyde is my best friend,” he said.
Those words twisted Hyde’s heart. Even though he shouldn’t, he still saw Sakura as his best friend. That wasn’t the case anymore. Kiyoharu had taken that role now… and was doing an amazing job at looking after Hyde and trying to keep him happy. “Yes, we’re just friends. Very good friends.” He gave Kiyoharu a weak smile as he glanced up at him.
“I see.” Atsushi sounded slightly disappointed, but did seem pleased that Kiyoharu had a good friend. What an odd reaction. Was he just close to Kiyoharu and wanted to see him happy with a lover? Hyde would have to ask his friend about this later. When they were alone. Atsushi blinked then brushed his cape aside to take out his phone. He checked it then pocketed it again. “Alas I must take my leave of you, my dear mortals. The one who summoned me to this world seeks an audience with me.”
Kiyoharu raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know demons had iPhones.”
Atsushi scowled. “The mortal who summoned me was quite insistent that I carry this strange device. It allows him to remain in touch with me at all times.”
Hyde wondered who Atsushi was talking about. He’d have to ask Kiyoharu… “You shouldn’t keep him waiting then. He might get annoyed and throw holy water at you.”
“I guarantee he will be annoyed.” Atsushi adjusted his cape, bowed to them, then left.
“Who was he talking about?”
Kiyoharu looked after Atsushi. “Probably his lover. I haven’t met him yet, but I know Atsushi has someone.”
That made sense. Lovers didn’t like to be kept waiting. “Atsushi seems to care about you a lot,” he remarked.
Kiyoharu smiled. “He does. He’s the one who gave me a second chance at living when I had nothing. He gave me a job, helped me get an apartment, and gave me a new life. I owe him everything I have.”
Hyde was surprised. “Really?” Kiyoharu didn’t like to talk about his past much so the fact that he was doing it now showed how important Atsushi was to him.
“Yes. If we hadn’t met… I don’t think I’d be alive today.”
The artist shivered then reached up to wrap his arms around Kiyoharu. Just the thought of not having this man in his life scared him. Without Kiyoharu, what would have happened to him? How could he have had the strength to leave Sakura? He didn’t want to think about what might have happened.
* * *
Hyde’s emotions became more conflicted as the party wore on. He liked being here, was grateful that he’d come, but at the same time was hurting. The last time he went to a party was when he and Sakura were lovers. It’d been at a club where the two had danced, laughed, and been so happy together. Those memories were haunting him. Kiyoharu had asked him to dance earlier and Hyde had accepted even though he felt like he was betraying Sakura. He knew he shouldn’t feel that way since they were no longer lovers… it was just hard to convince himself. How much longer would he have to feel like this? Weeks, months, years? Would guilt strike him every time he got close to another man?
“Hey, are you okay?” Kiyoharu asked.
Hyde hesitated before responding. The other man would see right through him if he tried to lie so the truth was best. “I think so. I’m just… torn. A little sad,” he sighed. “I like the party and I’m glad I decided to come. Part of me feels like I shouldn’t be here though. It feels like I’m trying to move on too soon.”
Kiyoharu nodded. “I understand. Maybe it is too soon for you… but you can’t mope forever. You’ll have to move on with your life eventually.”
“I know,” Hyde whispered. “I… I think I do need to be here. It seems like it’s too soon but at the same time I should be here. This party is my first step to moving on.” Getting out of Kiyoharu’s apartment in general was the first step. He only left to work or run errands. Spending the rest of his time on the couch or in bed wasn’t healthy. Despite the logic, Hyde still felt guilty whenever he enjoyed himself. He just couldn’t help it.
“Does the party amuse you, my little witch?”
Hyde jumped at the sound of Atsushi’s voice. The other man had practically appeared out of nowhere to stand by the table he and Kiyoharu were seated at. Where had he come from? The artist noticed his hair looked ruffled and his cape was crooked. Clearly Atsushi was enjoying his party… a lot. “It does.” He smiled weakly. If only he didn’t feel so conflicted.
“It’s great. Hyde loves the food; I had to pull him away from the dessert table.” Kiyoharu laughed and dodged the artist’s playful smack.
Atsushi smirked. “I have no need for the mortal delicacies here so please eat your fill.” He adjusted his cape then offered his hand to Hyde. “Might I have a dance, my dear witch?”
The artist was caught off guard by the question. Dancing with Kiyoharu had been bad enough so being with a man he barely knew would be worse… but it’d be rude to deny the host a dance. “Sure.” He took Atsushi’s hand. The host helped him to his feet then led him to the dance floor. Even though a slower song was playing Hyde was still surprised when Atsushi placed his free hand on his waist. He wanted to… slow dance? It’d been a long time since Hyde had danced like this. He and Sakura had never been big on dancing. Sometimes they’d dance at parties or in their apartment if they felt particularly romantic one day. That was the extent of their dancing though. Hopefully he wouldn’t step on Atsushi’s foot or embarrass himself in some way. “I’m sorry,” Hyde apologized. “I haven’t danced in a while.”
“It’s all right.” Atsushi gave him a playful smile. “I’ve been alive for several centuries so have mastered the classical dances. Just follow my lead.”
Hyde nodded, still feeling a little nervous. Aside from that the guilt was starting to return. He’d accepted Atsushi’s request out of politeness and now felt horrible for being this close to another man.
Atsushi frowned. “Are you all right? You seem sad… is the party not to your liking?”
The artist sighed as he looked up at him. Should he tell him the truth? There was no reason to since he’d always been a private person and they barely knew each other. Maybe he should be brave though. Even though they were strangers, Atsushi was concerned about him. “No, I love it. It’s just…” Hyde bit his lip. “I’m trying to get over my ex-lover. I decided to leave him three weeks ago so adjusting to life without him is still hard. This is the first time I’ve gone out and done something for my own enjoyment so I feel guilty for trying to be happy and I feel guilty for dancing with Kiyoharu and now I feel worse because I’m dancing with you instead of the man I’m in love with and I think of him every time I hear your name because they’re so similar.” Hyde took a deep breath as he finished, blushing at the admissions. He hadn’t meant to say all that. The words had just flowed out of him.
Atsushi gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Enjoying yourself isn’t a crime. I’ve been divorced twice so I know there’s no set time where it feels okay to do things that make you happy. You’ll have to figure that out yourself. I don’t know the circumstances of your breakup but you seem like a good man. I’m sure your ex-lover wouldn’t want you to be miserable. And as for the issue of our names… that’s beyond my control. You could blame our parents.”
Hyde bit his lip. Two divorces? He felt like he was being overdramatic in comparison. “I know. I’m sorry your marriages didn’t work…”
Atsushi shook his head. “Don’t be. I was too young the first time I got married. My second…” he sighed. “I’ve since moved on and found happiness with someone else. Someone I should have been with all along.”
“You’re strong,” Hyde said quietly. Hopefully he could be that strong someday. He took a breath then sighed. Atsushi had confided in him so it was only fair that he do the same. “My… ex-lover broke his leg when he got caught up in cords and fell off a stage. His pain medications wouldn’t give him the relief he needed so he kept trying stronger medications. Then he tried heroin.” Heroin reduced the user’s ability to feel pain. It’d worked wonders on Sakura. “Before I knew it, I was dating an addict. I tried to get him to quit, said I’d leave him if he didn’t clean up. I thought he would… but he didn’t. So I left him.”
Atsushi frowned again. “Addiction is a terrible thing to deal with. Dating an addict is like loving someone with a split personality. One is the person you know and love while the other just wants their drug of choice.”
Hyde snorted. “I told him I was in a threesome between him and heroin.” That or he was the jealous lover that wanted to break them up and have Sakura all to himself.
“That’s a fitting description.” Hyde squeaked as he was abruptly dipped, clutching the taller man tighter to steady himself. He hadn’t been expecting that. Atsushi looked amused as he pulled him back up. Sneak… he obviously enjoyed Hyde’s blushing and squeaking. His expression turned serious as he spoke again. “Leaving the person you love is always painful. I believe letting him go was the right thing, but there’s no need to torture yourself. Your lover obviously cared about you so think about this: would he want you to be happy or would he want you to be miserable and second guess everything you enjoy?”
Hyde sighed softly. Of course Sakura would want the first option for him. “He… he’d want me to be happy. He even asked Kiyoharu to look after me.”
Atsushi nodded. “That’s good. I can tell he cares deeply about you.”
“I care about him just as much. I know he’s had a rough life… I’m just happy he likes me. We help each other feel better.”
“And Kiyoharu is happy now. I’m surprised to see the two of you together; he always comes to my parties by himself. I assumed he’d come alone again this year but he brought you. I can understand why though… and why he glows with happiness around you. You must be very special.”
Hyde blushed again. “I’m not that special.”
“You’ve attracted his attention so you must be.”
He gave Atsushi a shy smile. He hadn’t thought too much about it. All he’d done was walk into the tattoo shop where Kiyoharu worked with an idea. He’d left with a project partner that had soon become a friend. Had Hyde been that interesting though? “I… I guess so. He’s a good friend. I’m living with him until I can get back on my feet again.”
“I’m sure Kiyoharu enjoys that.”
The artist smiled a little. “I think he does.” He kept worrying that his friend would get sick of his tears and misery. He never complained though and seemed genuinely pleased to have Hyde living with him. Had Kiyoharu been lonely before? That seemed to be the case so they would be good for each other during this troubled time.
Atsushi turned slightly so he could see Kiyoharu, standing in the same place he’d left them. He’d gotten a drink and seemed to be watching them. Sometimes his eyes would stray to other parts of the club but always returned to them. Hyde wondered what he was thinking, if he thought it was weird to see his friend dancing with his boss. “I suppose I should let him have you back,” Atsushi said, taking his hand off Hyde’s waist to give Kiyoharu a brief wave. The hand was quickly returned, making the artist grateful he’d worn a costume that covered most of his body. He had a feeling this man would… appreciate any exposed skin too much.
“Or you could ask him to dance with you.” The artist smiled at Atsushi’s inquisitive look. “Kiyoharu adores you. He gets this starry eyed fanboy look whenever he talks about you.” His friend would be ready to murder him for saying this, but he couldn’t resist. Kiyoharu kept teasing him about his appetite in front of Atsushi so it was only fair that Hyde got to embarrass him.
Atsushi smirked. “I know he is. I don’t think he’d be too fond of dancing though. With you, yes, but not with me.”
Hyde glanced down as his stomach took that moment to growl loudly. He wasn’t sure if Atsushi could hear it but assumed he did as he received yet another amused look. “I get hungry easily,” he said, blushing as he rubbed his stomach.
“I can tell,” Atsushi said dryly. “I won’t keep you from the food any longer then.” He led Hyde to one of the food tables then released him, giving him a theatrical bow. “Thank you for the dance, my little witch.”
Hyde chuckled. “You’re welcome, demon.”
Atsushi straightened. “Don’t forget what I told you. There’s no crime in being happy.”
The artist sighed softly, rubbing his arms. “I… I’ll try to remember.” Accepting that he could turn his life around would be difficult to come to terms with, but he’d do it. He was good at adapting in difficult situations. “Thank you for listening. And for caring even though you just met me tonight.”
“You’re welcome.” Atsushi seemed distracted as he looked around the club. “I hope you enjoy the rest of my party.” He looked back at Hyde again and smirked. “Stay until the end if you can; I always conclude my parties well.”
Hyde nodded. He was curious to see how this one would end so he’d stay. “I will.”
“Good. Enjoy your night, Hyde.”
“I will.” The artist started filling his plate with food, noticing Atsushi catching a man with long black hair by the sleeve of his red kimono and pulling him into his arms. Was this his lover? What a flirt though… Hyde smiled faintly and shook his head. At least he’d listened to the artist’s problems. It felt good to talk about these things. Maybe he’d be able to feel better tonight.
* * *
At 3 AM the lights once again dimmed and the music was switched off. Hyde didn’t feel tired and had been chatting with Kiyoharu in the corner. “Oh, is it ending?” he asked.
“Yeah. We can stay longer if you want but looks like Atsushi’s done for the night.” He led Hyde over to the stage where people were already starting to gather. They were obviously anticipating how Atsushi would conclude the party.
They didn’t have too long to wait. Once again organ music began to play as the stage was obscured with smoke. Red stage lights shone through the smoke. Hyde stood up on tiptoe to see better, glancing up as Kiyoharu draped a supportive arm around his waist. “I can hold you up if you want a better view.”
“I’m not that short,” Hyde grumbled.
Kiyoharu didn’t look convinced, which made him pout. There wasn’t much time to sulk since there was movement on stage. This time Atsushi had company. The man in the red kimono was by his side, head down and hair covering part of his face. Atsushi’s lover was still a mystery. Hyde wondered who he was but his attention was soon captured by the party host. The smoke around him had faded and he pulled his lover closer. “Thank you, dear mortals, for coming to my party and spending your time in this world of my creation instead of the dull, mundane one we live in.” Atsushi adjusted his cape. “My party next year will be bigger and grander. Now I must bid you farewell… I require human energy to last another day.” He smirked as he pulled his lover against his side. “And if you’re not careful it’ll be yours.” He laughed madly as the smoke obscured the stage. When it faded they were gone, leaving a skull in their place.
Hyde joined everyone in clapping then glanced up as Kiyoharu spoke to him. “What did you think of the party?”
“It was interesting.” Despite his moments of self-doubt and insecurity he had enjoyed himself. He tried to follow Atsushi’s advice and mostly it worked. “I liked it.”
Kiyoharu adjusted his kimono. “He always has the best parties. Do you want to go back to the apartment now?”
“I don’t know.” Hyde pushed his hands into the pockets of his witch dress. “I know it’s late but I…” he sighed. “I’ve tried to be happy. I’m afraid I’m going to mope and feel guilty if we go back to your apartment.”
Kiyoharu frowned. “Maybe. There’s an abandoned building across the street. We could go there and tell ghost stories.”
Hyde blinked. “But it’s just the two of us.” Ghost stories were more fun with a group of people. More stories to share, more people to scare.
“So?” Kiyoharu smirked. “There might be more by the time we’re done.”
The artist shivered at the thought. “Let’s do it.” He followed Kiyoharu outside, stopping to get a coffee before heading towards the four-story building. The other man briefly explained that it used to be a laundromat and coffee shop when it’d been running. Plumbing problems had driven both out of business and all the machines had been removed. A thrill of excitement went down Hyde’s spine as he stepped into the building with Kiyoharu. The other man took his phone out of his pocket and used the flashlight app to light up the interior. There was a front desk, stairs, and darker spaces on the floor where the machines used to be. The artist automatically took a step closer to Kiyoharu. Abandoned buildings had always held an eerie fascination for him. To think of the people that had once walked these dusty floors, spent money, worked here… there was a forgotten history in this building.
Kiyoharu scraped some dust off the floor with his shoe then tucked his kimono under him and sat down. Hyde joined him, smiling a little as the other man held the phone under his chin. “I’ll go first.” Kiyoharu was quiet for a few moments as he debated what to tell the artist. Then he smirked. “Twelve years ago there was a little girl named Sayaka…”
Hyde gulped and shifted closer to Kiyoharu as he finished his story. “That… that was a good one.” He smiled nervously then glanced around as a precaution. There was nothing but them and the dust. As much as he loved swapping ghost stories doing so in an abandoned building was especially unnerving.
Kiyoharu grinned. “Scared?”
“I’m not,” Hyde squeaked. He rubbed his arms then thought of the ghost stories he’d heard and read. Which one would scare Kiyoharu… maybe the one about the vengeful ghost who spread curses through tattoos. He’d just decided to tell that one when he heard noises upstairs. Floorboards were creaking and there was something that sounded like… voices. Hyde immediately huddled up against Kiyoharu’s side, clutching his sleeve. “What was that?” he whispered.
The other man frowned as he wrapped his arm around Hyde. “There’s someone else here.” He got up then shined his phone around the room. The artist followed him, freezing as he noticed the dust on the stairs had been disturbed. Then he relaxed as he realized it was footprints. Ghosts didn’t leave tracks. Then he remembered the horror movie he’d watched with Kiyoharu yesterday. The spirits had left signs of their presence in the couple’s apartment. Prints left in a victim’s blood, scratches on the walls. Hyde swallowed and clutched Kiyoharu’s arm. He liked to think that ghosts weren’t real. In this case, with his imagination running wild, he couldn’t rule out that possibility.
Kiyoharu glanced down at him. “Let’s find out who’s here.”
Hyde bit his lip. “Are you sure?”
The taller man chuckled. “Ghosts don’t leave footprints.”
“But that movie…”
“Is a movie.”
The artist hesitated, glancing between the door and the footprints on the stairs. In the end curiosity got the better of him. Keeping a firm grip on Kiyoharu’s sleeve, he took a step towards the stairs. The other man led the way and headed up the stairs. Hyde nibbled on his lip until he tasted blood as he followed Kiyoharu. What would they find up there? People? The ghosts his wayward imagination expected to see? Damn it… he shouldn’t have watched so many horror movies this week. He loved horror books and movies but usually they didn’t scare him too badly. All the creepy things he’d seen and read were coming back to haunt him now. Not good… why did he do this to himself?
The voices became louder as they reached the second floor but were still muffled. The dust on the stairs to the third floor had been disturbed as well… whoever was speaking must be up there. Still nervous, Hyde followed Kiyoharu. The voices were clear enough to understand once they were halfway up the stairs.
“Maybe not one of the best places we’ve been in but one of the times.”
A laugh then what sounded like skin being smacked. “You’re so perverted.”
“Says the one who wanted to come here,” was the dry retort.
Hyde blinked. That… sounded like Atsushi. He reached the top of the stairs and immediately blushed. Atsushi was there with his lover and both were in the process of getting dressed. His lover froze in putting on his red kimono as he saw them. Hyde saw his horrified face for a brief second before he seized Atsushi’s cape and hid under it. His fingers shook out of desperation to put the kimono back on and cover himself. Hyde’s blush deepened. So these two had been the ones he’d heard… how embarrassing!
“So much for our ghosts,” Kiyoharu snorted.
Atsushi didn’t look remotely embarrassed as he pulled his shirt back on. “What are you two doing here?”
“Telling ghost stories,” Hyde said.
Atsushi glanced at Kiyoharu and how Hyde was still clinging to his arm, causing his sleeve to fall off. Thanks to Hyde’s panic the other man did look a little disheveled. “Right… I’m sure you two were up to more than just telling ghost stories.” He smirked as he smoothed his hair down. “Have a nice lay?”
Hyde squeaked and hid his face in Kiyoharu’s sleeve. “We weren’t having sex!” he insisted. Atsushi should know better after what the artist had told him.
“We weren’t.”
“Why come to an abandoned building then?” Atsushi was obviously unconvinced.
Kiyoharu rubbed Hyde’s back. “Like we said, we came here to tell ghost stories. Get your mind out of the gutter.”
The artist cautiously raised his head then smiled as he saw Atsushi trying to tug his cape away from his lover. “My cape isn’t part of your costume,” he complained. “Stop being shy; it’s just Kiyoharu and Hyde. They don’t even know who you are.” He looked annoyed as he glanced up at the pair. “I’d introduce you but he’d probably hit me.”
Hyde finally let go of Kiyoharu. “Or throw holy water on you.”
Atsushi smirked. “Did you hear us and think the building was haunted?”
The artist squirmed. “Yes…” this was so embarrassing.
Atsushi wrapped his arm around his still-hiding lover, pulling him up against his side. “That’s because he’s so loud.” Again his chest was smacked. Atsushi didn’t seem to care as he caught that hand and tried to pull his cape away. His lover immediately clutched the cape tighter to prevent him from taking it back. Atsushi glared at him. “You’re messing up my demon costume,” he complained. Hyde was curious to know who the other was but wouldn’t pry. Poor man was embarrassed enough.
Kiyoharu nudged him towards the stairs. “You two are obviously very busy so we won’t intrude on you any longer. Good night,” he chuckled and started town the stairs.
Hyde smiled shyly. “It was nice to meet you. Good night.” He turned and chased after Kiyoharu before Atsushi could imply that they were going to have sex.
Too late since he was already calling after them. “Find another building so you two can… tell ghost stories again.” He laughed, then resumed complaining to his lover about the cape. “Give it back! They’re gone now.”
Hyde was anxious he’d start hearing more from the pair. He went down the stairs as quickly as possible then left the building with Kiyoharu. Running into horny couples was one of the risks of telling ghost stories in abandoned buildings. You never knew who else would be there.
“Might as well go home,” Hyde said. Home… part of him still thought of home as the apartment he’d once shared with Sakura. Kiyoharu’s apartment was replacing it now. Even though it felt like home, it wasn’t really his. He should start looking for a new apartment soon. Maybe next week… or the week after. Hyde wasn’t quite ready to leave yet. He didn’t think Kiyoharu was ready to let him go either.
Maybe it was best they stay together for a little longer then.
Notes1) Writing this was bittersweet... Hyde and Kiyoharu hate each other later :/
2) Atsushi came into this universe a couple weeks ago. I've been finding more scenes to put him in but he's not a major character until the late part of the main story.
3) Care to guess who Atsushi's lover is?
