MUCC: 4.22 Shibuya O'East
May. 5th, 2013 11:28 pmI forgot to post this one, oops!
When I saw MUCC at NHK Hall there was an option to buy tickets for another show so I scored one for me and one for
lunafair She had just arrived in Japan but went to this live with me just for Tatsurou. Now that is dedication.
Artists: Fake! And MUCC
Date: April 22, 2013
Venue: Shibuya O’East
Shibuya O’East is a smaller venue. Before the live started shirts for this live were on sale—but the shirts weren’t interesting, so Anna and I didn’t buy any.
Shibuya O’East isn’t a great place to wait as the entryway gets extremely crowded with fans pushing to get through when their numbers are called. The guy calling the numbers did it one by one at first (the American girl and the Japanese girl behind us said it was probably Tatsurou’s idea to troll us) then finally got up to calling by groups of 10. Drink token was 500 yen. Once our numbers were called we went up the stairs and past where the t-shirts had been on sale. Our ticket stubs were collected and there were two cups: one for MUCC and one for Fake. Obviously I was there for MUCC so I said they were my favorite. Behind the ticket collectors was tour and official goods for both bands. Once leaving that room there was the bar with drink tickets (just got water). Figuring out how to get to the actual live area was slightly complicated but it was down the stairs. Ended up at the very back leaning against a small wall area which led to a shit view part of the time. Had to stand on tiptoe a lot to properly see but it was that or being packed in at the front group.
It was easy to tell who the MUCC fans were based on their shirts. The girl next to me was in the skeleton shirt Tatsurou designed so I started chatting with her. She was also just there for MUCC and is a Tatsurou fan too. She said they were going to play a new song tonight, and that Yukke had announced it on Twitter. Chatted with her for a bit and then the live started. As she predicted Fake was first (the drum design was clearly not for MUCC). To be honest I didn’t pay much attention during this band. The music was okay, the band was obviously good, but it was too much of a standard rock sound. There was nothing unique about it. It’s rock music I could hear anywhere. The singer was friendly though and said hajimemashite to the fans, as most of them were just there for MUCC. Then he was mentioning that the official name for MUCC fans is Muckers so he was laughing and saying Fake doesn’t have an official fan name yet. They played for about an hour then left the stage. Some people left the venue since they had been there for Fake but most people were just there for MUCC. The curtains had closed after Fake and it was maybe a ten minute wait while the stage was being prepared for MUCC.
At last the curtain opens again showing the huge Shangri-La tour flag in the background. There was a mini light show with the red, green, and blue lights flashing and lighting up the stage. Then there was this horrible light effect with extremely bright lights flashing that made it difficult to see. But MUCC started coming out on stage. SATOchi came out first, then Miya, then Yukke… and last but not least, Tatsurou. All of them were wearing the same outfits from NHK Hall and looked the same style wise. Tatsurou was slightly different as he wasn’t wearing the jacket and didn’t have neon green braided into his hair. But otherwise he looked the same – same hair, same skirt and tights combo, etc. Seeing MUCC in a smaller venue was great as I could actually see them without the use of binoculars. Again, Tatsurou is just gorgeous in person… although Yukke is so shiny he’s kind of blinding.
The first song they played was Mr. Liar, just like at NHK Hall. I’m pretty sure all of the songs they played were ones from Shangri-La and I still haven’t listened to Shangri-La all that much so it’s hard for me to know which songs they did play. They definitely did play Mr. Liar though and, to my delight, played Nirvana. I love hearing Nirvana live as it’s the first pure MUCC song I heard… and I loved it so much I had to start listening to them.
Some opening notes that sounded like the opening to Nirvana but weren’t quite it were being played. Then Miya and Yukke did something a little different, making me wonder if they were going to play Nirvana or not. But they did! The lights were mostly white for this song and I knew my face had just lit up when I heard the opening notes to Nirvana. I absolutely love hearing Nirvana live and I’m so glad I’ve been able to hear it twice. When I heard MUCC’s cover of Jupiter, I loved Tatsurou’s voice and had to start listening to them. Nirvana was the first just MUCC video I found… and I was hooked right away. But Nirvana live is beautiful and kind of powerful too because it is so gentle. Sometimes Tatsurou would sing with his hand over his heart but for the stronger notes he’d be bending back and clasping his microphone in both hands. There was a part during the chorus where Tatsurou had the fans sing. I knew a couple of the lines so I could sing along then had to just mumble halfheartedly for another part. During instrumental solos either Yukke or Miya would be under the spotlight.
I can’t remember what other songs I played but it was a really nice live. I wish it had just been MUCC in this venue but I at least was able to see MUCC in a smaller venue. There was no chance for an encore and I stuck around hopefully but no, the lights were coming on and the live was truly over. But Anna and I were both glad we came and that I got tickets because it was a really good live.
As I can’t remember much of the individual songs I’ll just focus on the highlights:
Tatsurou is so fun live as he’s so bouncy. He’d run around on stage, hop around, jump on amps… he’s very energetic! And he’d wrap his toes around his mic stand like a monkey at one point. It was pretty cute. Every so often he’d pause to take a drink and sometimes he’d just hop up on SATOchi’s drum platform or just lean against it. The part of his hair that he left down would be falling over his arm throughout the live and his braid would whip around whenever he was jumping. During one part Tatsurou came to the right side of the stage and was crouching on the amps and leaning over.
When there was a break between songs he did his MC but asked all the fans to sit. There wasn’t much room for me to do so so I settled for crouching awkwardly. Gave me a nice view of Tatsurou and his big smile at least. They were all so happy to be there and Tatsurou kept smiling throughout the live. He seemed happier in this venue than he was at NHK Hall. Small venues seem to be the best for both fans and musicians.
MUCC's part ended all too soon and there was no option for an encore... probably because it was a two man show.
