The Art of Denial Questions
Jun. 9th, 2013 02:59 pmSoon after posting Chapter 1 of the Art of Denial I had ideas for ways I could turn it into an original novel. This series was born out of me wanting to write more with Atsushi... a friend and I had been writing a story where he and his assistants are taking a vacation at a hotel which, unfortunately for Atsushi, turns out to be haunted. Writing stalled and I wanted to write more in that universe so badly that I came up with my own ideas.
Anyway, Art of Denial and the hotel sequel are going to be original novels. As I was working on the fanfic version of Art of Denial I wondered if I was wasting my time doing this since I planned to write it with original characters someday. I decided I should work on the fanfic version anyway, that it'd be good to work on since I've noticed that I get ideas for original novels and then... don't write them. But I'd actually work on these two novels. I've been getting ideas for both of them and as I was typing up the outline I kept wondering if it would be better to stop writing the fanfiction version at all.
Which brings me to the point of this entry:
1) Are you still reading the Art of Denial
2) Would you read this story if I changed it to an original version? Parts will be the same and parts will be different
3) Please tell me why you would or wouldn't read
4) Should I complete the fanfiction version of Art of Denial?
Those are all the questions I have... it's something I'll have to think about.

Date: 2013-06-09 08:40 pm (UTC)Thank you! It's hard to start writing original works. At least with fanfiction there'se always a demand for that and I feel the pressure to keep posting, but with original work it's basically just me trying to motivate myself.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. Have you done any writing lately? I remember you mentioned not being overly fond of typing on a laptop...

1. I am still reading it though I've been sick today so haven't read the latest chapter yet.
2/3. Yeah I would totally read it if it was an original fiction. I love the idea and its totally the sort of novel I would read.
4. It depends how much time you have/or want to dedicate to it. If you have time to finish it and want to then go for it but if you feel your time would be better spent on the original one then you'll probably be better off doing that instead.
Hope this helps :)

Great :) I knew you would be down for reading the original.
I've done some thinking about it today and yesterday. Time would be better spent if I wrote it as a novel. I feel like character interaction would be better, I'm looking forward to writing with my new OCs, and I feel like the overall story would be best if I write it as a novel. I've actually taken Art of Denial off my fanfic to do list.
It does :)

Of course! I love reading your original works!
I think you've made the right decision although I will miss reading the fanfic version too. Will you post the original here?

Date: 2013-06-10 09:19 pm (UTC)I understand. In that case it really is best to only write original works.
That's great :)
Awesome! I'm excited to work on it and try out my new characters. The story will be better as an oriignal form... I'm too limited when it comes to fanfiction.
Um, I think I will. I don't have the desire/confidence to deal with the stress of trying to get published (or figuring out how to publish to an ebook) so I'm pretty sure I'll be posting to LJ still

Date: 2013-06-10 09:23 pm (UTC)I've decided that I'm not going to continue the fanfiction. You're right, it would end up seeming like a waste of time and that would be reflected in the writing.

Date: 2013-06-10 02:51 pm (UTC)but I think it's never a waste of time to write, even if you're writing the fanfic of a story you want to turn into an original story. while writing the fanfic, you keep practicing and you can edit later..
I think it's not a waste of time, but it's up to you, of course. ^_^
I wouldn't mind reading both fanfic and original. well, it's all up to you in the end. ^_^ But I have nothing against fanfics that turn into original novels later on.. because I think that's how I'm going to end up doing it too xD

Date: 2013-06-10 09:25 pm (UTC)Practicing with the fanfic is what I thought I would do... but it'll be better as an original work. And to me, the fanfic would be a waste of time because it's taking time away from being able to write the better, original version.
I've decided it's something I should try XD I've spent too many years writing fanfiction. It's time to work on original ideas too

Date: 2013-06-10 10:51 pm (UTC)Well, liking the fandom or not liking it isn't really much of an issue for me. xD I like the fandoms though, so all is fine. haha. But it's like ... even if I don't know the fandom much, or even if I don't like it much ... I can still read good fiction, you know. You write things that don't need too much background. They're stories on their own and that's why they'll make a good base for original works.
at least that's what I think xD

Date: 2013-06-11 03:46 pm (UTC)All right, sometimes people
like mewon't read things in other fandoms. But yay you like them XD Oh okay, that makes sense. Yeah now that I basically just write alternate universe you just need to know what everyone looks like... the rest of the details come in the story. Exactly, I would like to try publishing this one but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that.No I agree XD
